Summary
The Senior Vice President of Partnerships leads the design and implementation of resource development strategies to increase revenue and build a sustainable funding base for the National Geographic Society. This position will be charged with building alliances with individuals, organizations, foundations and corporations that will increase and diversify funding for the National Geographic Society.
This position requires a seasoned, enthusiastic and creative leader with an inspired and strategic outlook. S/he must be articulate, persuasive and passionate in support of National Geographic Society's overall mission, vision, and goals to change the world through science, research, conservation, exploration, education, and storytelling.
The incumbent develops, implements, and manages the organization's strategic partnership and fundraising strategies working collaboratively with the Exploration & Impact and Marketing & Engagement departments and National Geographic Partners. S/he oversees and is personally involved with all areas of funds development, including annual giving, major gifts, foundation relations, corporate relations, donor relations, database management, budget development and management.
The position reports directly to the President& CEO and is a member of the senior leadership team.
Responsibilities
1. Lead the National Geographic Society's efforts to design and implement creative strategies for broadening the organization's base of support. Lead the design and implementation of a comprehensive business development/fundraising plan, with an emphasis on creating a partnership strategy that targets global corporations, foundations and individuals to fund programmatic priorities. Identify, develop, diversify, and mentor the strategic partnerships and development team.
2. Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to overall organizational strategies and representing the priorities of the revenue function. Participate in promoting an organizational culture that values long-term strategic thinking, creativity/innovation, and high performance.
3. Drive the prospecting of new partnerships through research on funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position the National Geographic Society ahead of major funding changes or trends. Secure corporate, foundation and individual donor solicitation meetings for relevant National Geographic Society staff, including the President & CEO, the Executive Vice President of Exploration and Impact Officer, National Geographic Society talent, and other senior staff or Board members as may be required. Oversee the management and stewardship of existing and new relationships with individual, corporate and foundation partners, ensuring their needs are met and they are engaged on a meaningful level with the National Geographic Society. Prepare briefing documents for meetings and ensure proper follow-up. Collaborate with National Geographic Partners sales organization to leverage the power of the National Geographic brand and ensure strategies and relationships are coordinated.
4. Work with the National Geographic Society’s Marketing & Engagement department on solicitation materials, concept papers, grant proposals, talking points, web site content, press releases etc. to secure and/or recognize funding opportunities. Work collaboratively across the organization to solicit input and coordinate the participation of the program, finance, marketing, membership, and web teams in partnership activities.
5. Develop and implement evaluation metrics to measure the success of chosen strategic partnership strategies. Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development and partnership programs. Monitor all partnership and donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.
6. Manage the organization's International Council of Advisors such that it is aligned with organizational funding priorities.
Minimum Education Required
Master's degree preferred in business, marketing or related field.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
Minimum of fifteen years of experience in resource development broadly defined; experience can include major institution fundraising; business development; political and/or advocacy outreach and organization, or other roles that show the ability to build coalition and networks of committed supporters.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Open and collaborative leadership style. Strong ability to build and lead a team as well as work in partnership with other staff, individual donors, corporations, and foundations. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and work within tight deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term strategic relationships. Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising and partnership initiatives. High energy and passion for the National Geographic Society nonprofit's mission is essential.
