Job Introduction
Research & Development (BBC R&D) is part of BBC Design and Engineering and has a worldwide reputation for contributing to and leading the engineering research and development of many of the key broadcast technologies that have been introduced over the last 50 years. Our research work is mainly on new technologies which are expected to be rolled out over a 1 to 5 year timescale and they require both in-depth theoretical knowledge and also a practical approach to potential deployment.
Role Responsibility
We are currently recruiting for Trainee Research Technologists to join us in BBC R&D and with this exciting opportunity you’ll have the chance to develop the technical and innovation skills required to contribute to and steer future technical developments within the BBC. This includes undertaking both technology research and the leadership of technology development throughout the BBC on a variety of projects; either as stand-alone smaller projects or as parts of larger projects where you’ll work with teams of more senior Technologists.
After successfully completing the two-year traineeship, you can expect to be promoted to Technologist and begin to take on responsibility for projects that could change the future of the media industry. We have three laboratories - two in London and one in Salford and traineeships will be offered at all sites. You may also have the opportunity to study for an MSc or PhD as a part of your work.

Skills and interests that are particularly in demand across current R&D projects include software development (including Python, web services, C++/Linux/Javascript), IP networking, data science, and machine learning.
We also need your informed knowledge of and passion for the technologies involved in a broadcasting organisation; this might include - radio, TV, on-line, mobile or emerging technologies such as VR, in both production and delivery, together with a track record in software and/or electronic engineering projects, gained through project work as part of a relevant degree, extra-curricular project work or employment experience.
As well as an understanding of future trends that will affect how the BBC produces and distributes its content, you’ll have a proven commitment to working in a technology innovation/implementation environment and an appreciation of the need for, and the ability to develop, excellent communication skills. You’ll have the ability to work under pressure and demonstrate resilience to ensure the optimum solution is used with a full understanding of the costs, timescales and risk involved and will be able to take a technical need or solution and explain it to a non-technical audience.
