Blackboard, the leader in higher education learning software and campus card systems, is searching for a highly technical Senior Database Software Engineer. Blackboard campus card systems are installed in North America’s largest and most prestigious universities. As a Senior Database Software Engineer, you are responsible for enhancing and maintaining a MySQL Online Transaction Processing database. You will participate in the design and maintenance of successor SQL and NoSQL databases. You will play an integral role in the success of the product delivery and quality. Specifically, you are responsible to:
• Analyze problems and program solutions that appropriately trade off architectural constraints of functionality, usability, performance, reliability, and scalability
• Consult with the developer team on appropriate technical solutions, whether SQL or NoSQL, for new SaaS feature sets, designing and implementing database schema changes to support new functionality
• Contribute to proper multi-tier architectural design across all facets of the system
• Manage, Configure, and support MySQL and NoSQL databases in a high volume client/server transaction processing environment
• Work with peers to determine long term architectural direction
• Support the application during quality assurance, user acceptance testing, and post release
• Assist in defining and implementing appropriate monitoring criteria
• Monitor, analyze, and implement performance tuning functions in support of the operational baseline
• Comply with and contribute to consistent development guidelines (coding, change control, build, versioning)
• Mentor junior and senior application developers on Database operations and maintenance
Required Skills:
The required skills for this position are:
• 7-8 years of experience in Database Administration with both hosted and cloud implementations
• 7-8 years of experience in managing MySQL database software in with both OLTP and OLAP applications
• 7-8 years of experience with Linux
• Experience and deep understanding of enterprise management, installation, and configuration for MySQL databases for a high volume transaction processing in hosted and cloud systems
• Able to implement alternatives for scaling and high availability systems
• Demonstrable analytical and problem solving and planning skills
• Experience with one or more source control applications
• Experience with one or more defect tracking applications
• Ability to understand technical requirements and convert them into work tasks
• Team oriented, with good communications skills.
Preferred Skills:
The preferred skills for this position are:
• Experience with payments and credit card processing systems
• Knowledge of PCI standards
