The Business Planning and Operations Analyst role is a key part of the Sports team, a group whose mission is to provide a diverse set of products that engage and delight Sports fanatics across the globe.

You are passionate about all things data, and you love Sports. You're great at handling large datasets from a wide variety of sources--often working on your own to find patterns, identify trends, and highlight opportunities. Although you're deep into data, you are also product-minded, and have the ability to make your work result in increases in product revenue and engagement. You're flexible and are not easily rattled by difficult challenges, such as dealing with complex data issues.
Your Day
• Drive daily data research and analytics for Yahoo Homepage, one of the largest media properties on the Internet, including core KPI metrics tracking revenue, users, and engagement.
• Assist with instrumentation specifications, gather data from various internal systems, synthesize and analyze the data, and effectively communicate actionable insights to product managers and other key stakeholders.
• Analyze user data in order to help develop a product that inspires and delights our users, creating hypotheses to span the desktop and mobile devices. Take initiative to develop your own hypotheses regarding our products and prove or disprove your own theories through data, leading to product improvements.
• Leverage data to understand our product area in depth, identify areas of opportunity, and execute projects to drive growth and engagement
• Perform and lead deep-dive engagement and user segmentation analytics using industry standard web or mobile metrics, advanced network metrics, and new metrics you help create
• Forecast and track online traffic trends in order to monitor product health, create goals for major events, and assist financial analysts with quarterly and annual projections
• Maintain close working relationships with data platform teams and data engineers; lead data platform enhancements, champion data quality, and provide input for company-wide data initiatives
• Mentor product managers and other data consumers in the data-driven approach to product management
• Collaborate with qualitative researchers to formulate hypotheses and design experiments to test those hypotheses
• Coordinate experiments run across media properties, developing your own best practices for designing, executing, and documenting all aspects of the experiments at scale
You Must Have
• Bachelors or Masters degree in a field with a quantitative emphasis, MBA a plus
• 3+ years of product analytics experience, preferably in Internet, media, or consulting
• Ability to distill large, complex datasets into compelling, data-driven stories and actionable insights
• Experience using data mining tools in an HDFS environment like SQL/HQL, Python, R, Pig, as well as BI platforms such as Tableau, Looker, Microstrategy, etc.
• Persistence in identifying, quantifying and resolving data discrepancies to ensure high-accuracy reporting
• Initiative & passion for developing and pursuing projects without request
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
