We are looking for a highly motivated, collaborative data scientist to join the Advanced Computing and Data Science Lab. The mission of the Lab is to develop and apply advanced computing and data science methods to improve the value of Pearson products, services and processes; thus, the position provides the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research to push the boundaries of education and to make a substantial contribution to improving learning and instruction at scale.

As a data scientist in machine learning, you will have the opportunity to leverage Pearson’s rich data and in collaboration with our innovative scientists and engineers, innovate a state-of-art machine learning infrastructure to develop data products and capabilities that are used by millions of users. Your work will improve learning for students around the world, support teachers and increase and propel the growth of our business. Our data scientist work on defining the new frontier of data-driven capabilities for education and work on how to evaluate potential approaches, build features, algorithms, and determine metrics which are critical for machine learning models.
Responsibilities:
• Lead the development of machine learning based technologies that drive adaptive, personalized recommendation services, predictive analytics capabilities, data extraction scripts, data visualizations and other software required to support R&D.
• Introduce the company to new ways of solving machine learning problems and suggest new areas of exploration.
• Identify and promote the use of new technologies, toolkits and frameworks, areas of inquiry, ways of working, methods and approaches that helps the lab continue to push the boundaries of innovation.
• Work closely with scientists with expertise in diverse fields, and other partners, to build functional proofs of concept.
• Serve as outstanding model of individual and group performance. Support mentoring of less senior members of the team when needed.
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Statistics or a related quantitative field.
◦ Highly qualified candidates on their way to a Ph.D. will be considered.
• 5+ years experience developing machine learning models at scale from inception to business impact.
• Deep understanding of modern machine learning techniques and their mathematical underpinning, such as classification, recommendation systems and natural language processing.
• Experience with distributed machine learning and computing frameworks (Spark, Weka, Mahout or equivalent). Applied experience preferred.
• Strong programming skills (Python, R, or Scala preferred). Other languages like Java and C++ a plus.
• Profound knowledge of working with data: data structures, data representation, data cleaning, data governance, and research database design. Experience with educational data is a plus.
• Track record of solving ambiguous and complex technical problems.
• Be able to act independently and create collaboratively, work in geographically distributed teams.
• Excellent organizational, written and verbal communications skills.
