Qualifications
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for ensuring the quality of a variety of student assessment materials. Must be able to:
• Copyedit and proofread a variety of written products, including test items, test forms, and ancillary documents, for punctuation, spelling, grammar, usage, and style, in accordance with industry-standard best practices, client specifications, and house style
• Apply formatting specs across subject areas, adhere to style sheets, and use good judgment in applying style
• Accurately proofread copy against mark-up as well as do cold reads for errors in formatted copy
• Verify edits for consistency; ensure uniformity and consistency across components
• Copyedit both on hard copy and online with precision and accuracy using standard proofreader's marks and online systems and tools
• Communicate effectively and act on instructions and training appropriately
• Work effectively both within department and across departments
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Work onsite and maintain a steady schedule
EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE:
• Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or other related discipline or work experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree
• At least three years of copyediting experience; two years of experience in copyediting educational assessment development stimuli, items, and/or ancillary products preferred
• Professionally tailored and strong verbal and written communication skills required
• Extensive knowledge of industry-standard style and usage guides (e.g., The Chicago Manual of Style, Gregg Reference Manual, Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Garner’s Modern American Usage, etc.) and how to apply and/or interpret them
• Experience with PDF mark-up and Google docs/sheets required; solid understanding of the use of HTML and XML in web publishing desired
• Ability to shift seamlessly between projects with diverging processes and styles
• Expertise in higher-level mathematics, social studies, science, and/or English literature a plus
• Professionalism shown by appropriate responses to challenging situations and dealing with difficult individuals with various working styles; awareness of nonverbal communication cues and ability to maintain professional demeanor under challenging circumstances
