The Atlantic has, for 158 years, put bold, important ideas above all else. Since our founding, we’ve consistently challenged readers to rethink just about everything, from technology and business to politics and culture. Now, help us rethink the news.
We're looking for a blogger/editor to help guide our news coverage on nights and/or weekends. Our definition of news is distinctive, international in scope, embedded in history, interested first and foremost in what is fascinating and urgent in the world in a given moment, not determined by the headlines scrolling by on a television ticker. We hope your application reflects a lens in tune with that definition. We’re looking for someone who can run all the aspects of this coverage — blogging, assigning work, editing stories and generally setting our pace and priorities in the course of a shift.
The ideal candidate will be happiest when immersed in the news, capable of working alone, leading our editorial team when a big news story is developing, and also coordinating coverage across multiple beats and editors. Candidates should have impeccable editorial and ethical judgment, a knack for clear, economical writing, and experience in leading and developing a team of news writers. We welcome candidates with imaginative, bloggy approaches to story framing and structure. We’re particularly interested in people who approach the news with genuine curiosity and humility, who gravitate most naturally to interesting questions rather than easy answers.
This job is full-time and is based in Washington, D.C. or New York, NY.
Core Attributes:
Across Atlantic Media, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in its candidates. In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions.
1. Force of Intellect - Atlantic Media seeks a discipline and rigor of thought as manifested, often, in exceptional academic performance and, later, success in a professional environment.
2. Spirit of Generosity - Equally, Atlantic Media seeks what we term a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition towards service and selfless conduct.
Atlantic Media is an EOE of Minorities/Women/Vets/Disability.
