We are seeking an exceptional and talented Research and Development (R&D) Director,with extensive C/C++ programming skills and solid ASR and ML knowledge. Responsibilities require oneto create and nurture a vision for, and overseeing the execution of, the R&D, managing a smallteam.You will target innovations in automatic speech and text assessment, including scoring of new response types and the evaluation and validation of automated assessment systems and related capabilities.
The research agenda would address advances in the empirical quality of the assessment engines and advance our understanding of best practices in assessment. Also includes expanding our understanding and use of existing automated assessment technologies, while laying the foundation for new technologies to be developed. The development agenda would implement the working research results to the production system.
You will be responsible for communication about the characteristics of automatic assessment and related statistical, measurement and research design issues for current and prospective users.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Conceptualize, plan, research, develop, deploy and operational monitor new methods to assessment engines
• Direct/administer personnel, fiscal, operational, and policy implementation activities for R&D units
• Plan long-term substantive R&D agenda for automatic speech and text assessment; conduct independent research, development and consulting
• Generate/contribute to new/modified methods and procedures related to automatic speech and text assessment
• Provide expert consultation and collaboration on problems arising from substantive research and/or testing programs, or corporate management concerns
• Direct the scientific and administrative conduct of major research, development, or large-scale analysis projects, exercising well-developed skills in the management of human and other resources; oversee development and application of technical competence of less senior staff
• Implement dissemination activities utilizing various methodologies to reach specific audiences
• Disseminate knowledge, particularly results of activities through publication of research papers, progress/technical reports, presentation of seminars, or other appropriate communication vehicles
• Supervise and mentor more junior staff (deliverables, career development)
• Assign/recommend staff to research programs and projects, evaluating their performance
• Review, approve, monitor personnel actions (hiring, performance appraisal, professional development)
Qualifications
Required experience will include:
• PhD in CS, EE, Computational Linguistics, or a related field
• 8+ years of progressively more independent research experience with a proven continuing track record of publications in major peer-reviewed conferences and journals
• Must have direct experience with ASR, NLP, ML, statistical modeling, and solid programming in C/C++
• Experience managing research staff and operational programs
• Demonstrate a willingness to learn and apply a wide range of technologies
• Experience with linguistic and statistical analysis of natural language would be highly desirable
• Experience in designing and running ASR experiments using HTK (primarily used for speech recognition research) or KALDI (same-toolkit) a plus
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
