Job Description
The most important part of a Content Delivery Network is the Network! This role is responsible for managing our Network Logistics team that is in charge of capacity planning, ordering, coordinating, installing, testing and turning up various types of network circuits (Transit, Internet Exchange and Private Peering, Public Peering – 10G and 100G links), cross connects, and associated equipment like patch panels or fiber bundles or dark fiber or local loops. This role will also lead and coordinate: Training for direct report personnel (a team of 3-5 Network Engineers and Coordinators); Interface with Collocation vendors and personnel on a global basis (issuing remote hands as an example); Project manage other internal groups for end-to-end connectivity and required testing for turning up circuits, including Network Operations, Data Center Operations, Finance, Carrier Relations, and Legal as needed. In short, this person will be THE owner for expanding our network to reach the appropriate scale needed to win in the marketplace with the best quality CDN on the planet!
Responsibilities:
• Manage and build out the team as needed to meet demand and provide amazing performance on the network for our customers, justifying headcount expansion when needed, providing mentoring and growth opportunities for your employees
• Analyze and identify network capacity expansion (along with our Carrier Relations Team) to identify bottlenecks in the network, and remove them – own capacity planning on the network
• Assign work to your crew accordingly and logically, ensuring cross-functional training, back-up/buddy systems to allow for people to take vacations while keeping the work going, and sharing responsibilities to grow individuals
• Ensure Network Engineer and Data Center Engineer resource availability to meet demand and initiate escalations as needed to get the work done
• Lead the team in project managing all circuit and cross connect orders and turn ups of both private and public peering to ensure no (or minimal) backlog and forward looking forecasts are met in a timely manner
• Coordinate LoA (Letter of Authorization) management of all cross connects and circuits, ensuring we only pay (or don’t pay!) for cross-connects when appropriate
• Coordinate DLR (Design Layout Record) management of all cross connects and circuits, understanding our network topology, including backbones utilizing dark fiber – be the go-to-person for network build out needs
• Administer and manage various partner’s portal access and usage, including collocation providers, cross-connect providers, and 3rd party networks (lots of portals)
• Work closely with Peering Team (Carrier Relations and Network Operations) and order new physical interconnections as needed
• Work closely with the DCOps (Data Center Operations) for necessary end to end physical circuit connectivity and field operation
• Work closely with NetOps (Network Operations) for necessary circuit turn up testing and activation and troubleshooting
• Work closely with Carrier Relations activities on traffic grooming, traffic analysis and global network expansion (long term strategic thinking)
• Create synergies while driving down interconnection costs with major carriers and ISPs, getting creative, exploring new business models and partnership strategies
• Own the relationship with hundreds of networks worldwide, setting up quarterly or monthly or bimonthly checkpoints, providing forecasts, comparing demand to supply, forging new and deeper relationships, and improving lines of communication globally
• Schedule personnel work load for various orders and turn ups
• Maintain personnel quotas for peering and circuit turn ups
Qualifications
Requirements:
• 4+ years experience within the network interconnection and ISP industry
• 3+ years experience working along with digital media technologies and network technologies (BGP, LCR, MPLS, IP, etc.) - knowing BGP (read up on it please)
• Any experience with a Content Delivery Network (CDN) or in the CDN industry is a major plus – at least Google “How a CDN works”
• Experience coordinating resources across a complex ecosystem is amazing, or logistical experience in an operations field would be great too
• Solid understanding of both business and technical requirements
• Public IP transit experience (Internet Dedicated Ethernet, Internet Dedicated Access, Ethernet technologies)is a major plus – know what a cross-connect is please
• Traffic utilization methods and billing calculations are good to know (e.g. P95 Mbps Sustained and Peak, GB Delivered, Price Protected Ports, etc.)
• Strong conceptual and analytical thinking
• Strong attention to accuracy and detail
• Excellent communications skills and follow-up discipline (e.g. project management, herding cats, cracking whips, nudging, reminders, you get the point)
• A love for simple and smooth processes, or even better, automating processes as much as possible
• Must make sound decisions and produce accurate and timely results
• Must prioritize and organize work in a fast paced multi-task environment
• Must accurately interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Preferred Qualifications:
• BS/BA in Business, Project Management, Telecommunication or other related major from reputable 4-year university or BE/BS in Electrical Engineering
• Experience in Project Management and Circuit Provisioning
• Experience in CDN, telecom, digital media and/or related fields
• Experience working in a cross-functional organization
• Strong understanding of IP protocols
• PMP is a plus
