General Summary
The Costume Fabricator works as part of a team fabricating costumes for animation puppets used in Stop Motion features. Fabricators are required to pattern garments using both draping and flat pattern manipulation techniques. As well as using a variety of costume construction techniques, including but not limited to extremely fine hand sewing, cutting, fusing, gluing, embroidery; an innovative approach to textiles and fiber arts is highly desired. The ability to replicate many costumes accurately is essential. An impeccably high level of finishing is essential in all work and must be appropriate for miniatures and hold up to scrutiny on a big screen.
Essential Job Functions
• Follow reference images, designs and design direction when working on new puppets.
• Quickly grasp the design concept and style.
• Follow costume construction notes and direction to precisely duplicate puppet multiples.
• Ability to use a range of techniques to embellish fabrics, while maintaining fabric performance.
• Ability to create a support structure that goes under a garment that enhances desired puppet movement and performance. This includes hard elements like wires and rigid forms, as well as soft elements like foam or fabric linings .
• Must be able to work collaboratively with costume team members and also work closely with other departments ^.
• Must also be able to work independently, and take responsibility for personal time management to meet tight deadlines.
• Ability to completely document instructions for all patterns and processes used in creating a costume that are concise and easy to follow.
Qualifications
• S./B.A. in Animation, film, art or related field or equivalent combination of education/or experience.
• Experience in pattern cutting/draping. (Small scale/stop motion preferred)
• Experience of puppet fabrication and prop/model making preferred.
• Knowledge of textile and fiber art techniques.
• Knowledge of dying and color mixing.
• Knowledge of fabric properties.
• Knowledge of Photoshop and illustrator.
• Ability to show applicable work samples is critical.
