Distinguished Brooklyn Artist is seeking an experienced hard-working and obsessively organized Studio Manager who is a dynamic and flexible thinker who can manage all administrative aspects of running a contemporary artist studio. Applicant must have significant administrative experience, work well under pressure of ongoing deadlines, and be able to work efficiently without supervision. Applicant must also have strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to absorb existent office dynamics and protocols in order to propose innovative solutions to enhance the Studio's efficiency. The ideal candidate will have a long-term interest in a career in the arts and will be intellectually curious with an eagerness to learn and delegate.
This individual is expected to possess the following skills and qualifications for consideration:
- A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Art History, Fine Art Management, or Business Management is preferred, but not imperative.
- Must have documented experience (2-5 years) managing an art studio, gallery, artists’ cooperative, or similar experience in a related field with knowledge of contemporary art.
- Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and possess strong communication skills.
- Must have a professional demeanor, leadership and comprehension skills necessary to work closely with the artist, respecting the artist’s schedule, and supporting the artist’s priorities and vision.
- Must possess a business-minded approach to a fine art studio, with experience in the basic operations of a small business, and managing personnel.
- Ability to write artist statements, press releases, and/or editing media communications to/from galleries and institutions.
- Proficiency with MacOS X, Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, FileMaker Pro, Artbase, and Quickbooks Online.
- Ability to handle basic bookkeeping and liaising with our outside bookkeeping and payroll services related to projects.
Responsibilities:
- Work directly with the artist, as well as the production manager and studio members to ensure open communication of overall studio production to determine schedules and materials needed.
- Liaise between galleries, museums, collectors, and corporations in the best interest of the artist in a timely fashion.
- Manage project and financial activities of multiple LLC's.
- Maintain ArtBase image archive for works produced in the studio, to include paintings, sculptures, photographs, and other mediums related to the artist’s practice.
- Maintain office standard procedures including obtaining required contracts and signatures from subcontractors.
- Create and manage project budgets, logistics, calendars, timelines, and staff to deliver projects as per contracts.
- Work closely with bookkeeper to maintain operating budget and financial projections.
- Light bookkeeping to include petty cash, issuing payments, depositing checks, sales invoices, and providing paperwork or information to outside parties for payment.
- Track employee hours, schedule, and time-off.
- Manage hiring and coordinate internship projects according to studio needs.
- Coordinate travel arrangements for artist and companion/s, and be available to occasionally travel with the artist for lectures, exhibitions, and special projects.
- Maintain calendar of projects, meetings, trips, and events. Ensure everyone is aware of schedule changes.
- Lead weekly staff meetings to ensure clear and accurate communication regarding timelines, workload, studio visits, deliveries, and any issues that arise.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience and skills.
HOURS OF OPERATION: Monday-Friday 10-6pm and must be able to work occasional evenings or weekends for special projects, exhibitions, and for travel.
