We are seeking a Sr Director Communications in our Minnetonka, MN office. The Sr Dir Communications will be responsible for formulating and implementing strategies for Digital River’s internal and external communications activities, in alignment with overall company strategy and business objectives. The Sr Dir Communications acts as the custodian of the overall reputation of the company both internally and externally.
What You’ll Do:
People Management
• Planning: Define goals and determine the optimal course of action towards achieving the department/company goals
• Organizing: Develop the proper organization structure and chain of command which leads to organizational effectiveness and a high performing team
• Talent Acquisition: Attract/retain, Select/hire, and promote high caliber talent to achieve the objectives of the organization
• Coordinating: Communicate, supervise, and direct relevant staff ensuring that leadership guidelines are in place to manage a function
• Talent Management: Establish performance standards/objectives and conduct ongoing performance review discussions to ensure each employee’s performance meets set objectives to support salary action recommendations.
• Provide ongoing coaching and continuous training/development
Public Relations
• Lead and implement a global public relations plan that aligns with corporate initiatives and projects a positive company image to an audience of clients/potential customers, employees, industry analysts, the media community and the public overall; oversee the public relations agency relationship and agency activities in the US and Europe; define and lead global media tours; promote the company’s visibility in local, national, and international markets by directing the company’s relationships with key press and industry influencers as well as identifying newsworthy stories, pitch angles and bylines appropriate for media, print, radio, television and Internet; manage a pipeline of press releases, drafting and distributing news on behalf of the company.
• Manage executive relationships with the media, prepare executive spokespeople and act as a personal liaison; accompany executives on media tours and to major media interviews and industry events.
• Oversee the global monitoring and distribution of company news from newspapers, industry publications, blogs, etc., keep the company apprised of relevant information, and assist in formulating responses as needed.
• Manage speaking and award programs.
• Define metrics that will enable accurate measurement of the effectiveness of communication campaigns
• Report to the CEO and Board regularly about media coverage and communications successes/challenges.
Company Communications
• Prepare executive public speeches and other presentations, including brainstorming on communication objectives, topics and outlines, as well as researching and developing appropriate quotes, illustrations, anecdotes and video clips.
• Proactively work with global technical, customer service and sales teams to develop client communication strategies and plans in the event of a high-concern situation; coordinate communication components and distribution.
• Lead global communication plans and develop company messaging documents that support the roll out of strategic corporate initiatives and actions, including reorganizations, executive announcements, acquisitions and divestitures.
• Define, document and maintain the company’s internal and external global communication policies to drive best practices, ensure clear articulation of the company’s brand, protect the company’s reputation and ensure company communications are aligned and maximized across a variety of channels and stakeholder groups.
• Support investor relations activities, including developing messaging for and drafting the quarterly earnings script, and overseeing the production of the earnings call and investor call backs.
Branding
• Lead a thought leadership program to enhance the company’s position as an industry expert, and nurture relationships with key industry influencers, media, clients and prospects; work closely with market development on strategy, timing, lead tracking and reporting and success measurement.
• Build messaging platforms and coordinate campaigns based on key themes that position the company as an ecommerce leader, promote the brand and support lead generation.
• Direct the execution of a corporate branding strategy that includes a companywide messaging platform, brand identity system and product architecture framework.
Internal Communications
• Develop and implement strategies and build materials for the company’s internal communications efforts. Oversee employee communications through corporate channels such as email, blogs, video, town halls, etc.
• Provide communications support to internal departments (HR, IT), including communications planning, drafting materials and proofing/editing.
• Oversee the strategy, development and maintenance of the company intranet, including content strategy.
• Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization and work with leadership team and staff to craft internal and external communication solutions, and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
• Implement metrics to evaluate effectiveness of communication plan delivery.
Social Media
• Lead the company’s corporate social media strategy that spans multiple channels – including Twitter, LinkedIn YouTube, the company blog, etc.; collaborates with marketing, PR and advertising campaigns; and is coordinated across business units.
• Manage the global content strategy, establishing editorial calendars and creating timely and engaging content that aligns with the corporate brand, and supports demand generation and account-based marketing efforts.
• Build and grow a corporate social media ambassador program to amplify company messaging and support the development of a social selling culture, including developing and executing best practices training.
• Develop and nurture relationships with key social influencers.
• Address negative brand reputation on social media.
• Serve as a resource to provide guidance to internal stakeholders on social media issues.
• Use social media monitoring tools to monitor conversations and report on social engagement strategies and reputation management issues; measure the impact of social media programs, and analyze, review, and report on the effectiveness of campaigns.
• Maintain and evolve the company’s social media policy.
Events
• Oversee the company’s global external events, including maintaining the corporate events calendar; managing, defining goals, developing support materials and reporting on industry tradeshows, speaking opportunities, award presentations and community activities; serving as a liaison with industry organizations.
• Serve as the director of the company’s customer event,– a high production, networking event with a three day education program, attracting industry-leading speakers and multi-national companies. Lead a global cross departmental team to execute all aspects of the conference.
• Oversee the strategy, content and production of companywide events; ie; quarterly employee meetings, town hall meetings, special meetings requested by the CEO.
• Define and manage corporate culture activities that reflect corporate values and encourage employee engagement and collaboration across departments.
What You’ll Need to Succeed:
• Bachelor’s degree in Marketing/Journalism/Communications/Related Field, 15+ years of experience in Communications
• 15+ years of direct management experience
• Self-starter, comfortable working independently and in teams on project-based work in unstructured environment
• Demonstrated history of taking initiative and conscientiously following through on areas of responsibility
• Expert level writing for medium to large organizations, editing, copywriting, and proof-reading skills
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and analytical skills
• Outstanding problem solving and troubleshooting skills, and ability to multitask on competing priorities
Preferred:
• Master’s Degree
• In depth knowledge of product line and related markets
• Knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
