Director, Last Mile Design
DESCRIPTION
Amazon’s Human Centered Design (HCD) group is seeking a talented, passionate Design Director to help us drive innovation for our global Last Mile initiatives. In this position, you’ll have a significant impact on our business as you take a senior leadership role in setting the CX/UX direction and growing Amazon’s expanding worldwide last mile products and services. You will work collaboratively with business, technology, operations, and other design leaders to guide user experience design throughout the planning and development lifecycle for a multitude of unique and different customers and platforms.
Because the scope of this position extends across all of last mile (digital and physical), the ability to balance high-level, holistic reason with detail-oriented design is imperative. You must be a critical thinker with a good design sense, have a strong technical background, and an instinct for making things simple.
In addition, this position is responsible for design teams across multiple HCD design studios.
Human Centered Design (hcd.amazon.jobs) is a multidisciplinary group within Amazon Operations that is responsible for the design of many exciting products including Prime Now, Amazon Flex, Amazon Locker, and other new initiatives. Teams of designers, design technologists, writers, researchers, and producers work collaboratively in the HCD’s design and prototyping studios to create the next big thing for customers.
Responsibilities include:
• Lead large-scale customer experience initiatives in Amazon’s fast-paced, results-oriented environment to define, assess and optimize the performance of new and existing features.
• Create the vision for, and drive the design of, innovative solutions to a wide variety of user experience challenges across the both digital and physical spaces.
• Hire and develop strong design teams across multiple studio locations.
• Responsibly and effectively advocate for different types of customers and impart day-to-day strategic user experience leadership.
• Guide your team with scoping, prioritizing, and planning project work and requests with in-house teams, customers and vendors to ensure timely delivery.
• Ensure that all UX Design activities are executed at high quality levels, manage team initiatives, set priorities, and manage scoping.
• Own end-to-end design process and deliverables to effectively conceptualize and communicate design strategy and detailed interaction behaviors for both mobile and web.
• Collaborate effectively with an agile, multi-disciplinary team to evaluate the feasibility of proposed designs and champion great UX in the face of technical constraints.
• Promote and utilize a variety of qualitative and quantitative assessment methodologies throughout the development lifecycle; lead team in defining, tracking, and reporting key user experience metrics.
• Review with and gather feedback on work from business, product management, development and peer design teams as well as executive leadership.
• Evaluate new and emerging methods and technologies and identify best of breed to incorporate into your team’s toolkit; evaluate, establish, and apply best practices, patterns, and guidelines.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• 10+ years of experience as a user experience designer or interaction designer, or similar role.
• A portfolio of work demonstrating experience creating human-centered design solutions and showing your ability to turn ideas into a strong and unique creative vision.
• Experience leading design for a variety of form factors including: mobile, tablet, and desktop interfaces.
• Experience leading and delivery full life cycle design projects, form design strategy through execution.
• Fluency in best practices for web-based information architecture and design, as well as strong knowledge of usability principles and techniques.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills.
• Proven ability to work across teams and synthesize customer feedback and input from business leaders, product management, and engineering teams.
• Desire to work in a start-up style environment, where iteration is encouraged.
• Proficient with standard design and prototyping tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, Omnigraffle, Axure, Hype, etc.
• Fluent in English with a proven track record of presenting to and influencing senior management.
• Bachelor's degree in design, human-computer interaction (HCI), or related field required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in a highly agile/scrum environment.
• Background managing a rapid prototyping team.
• Experience designing products for global markets.
• Experience designing for both digital and physical.
• Experience with multiple platforms and form factors, including desktop/laptop, smartphone, tablet, and/or industry-specific devices.
• Demonstrated history of acquiring user data (e.g., conducting usability studies, user interviews, contextual inquiry) is a strong plus.
