Director of Product Management, Performance Engineering
The Performance Engineering team is chartered with identifying and resolving significant cost saving opportunities within Amazon.com's rapidly expanding infrastructure. We will use a variety of approaches to accomplish this, including improved monitoring and performance analysis systems, new infrastructure and tools, and communication of best practices across the company.
Our goal is to maintain the ability of each business unit to innovate, while still allowing sufficient attention and insight into runtime performance, stability and optimal resource utilization, as well as a deeper understanding of how each service interacts with neighboring systems.
The mission of our Performance Engineering Team is to enable Amazon’s distributed development teams identify, prioritize and drive improvements to our services and positively impact our customer experience, and doing more with less.
In this role, you will own product and program management for the Performance Engineering team, leading a team of 3-5 PMs with the following charter: identify and prioritize the largest opportunities and development a return-on-investment (ROI) model; program manage the multi-team development operational rollout in collaboration with partner teams, provide post-launch impact assessment, drive a continuous improvement cycle around the identification and prioritization of future projects, and advocate best practices across the company enabling the build of new applications and services in an increasingly more cost effective manner.
Specific duties include:
• Develop and manage the Performance Engineering product strategy and project roadmap from inception through implementation; establish processes, tools, and tracking/reporting mechanisms.
• Drive and coordinate priorities, commitments, and deadlines both within Performance Engineering and with our partners in other Amazon business teams.
• Lead and influence others effectively to establish clear coordination and accountability across teams in various geographic locations.
• Anticipate problems, seek creative solutions, productively escalate issues, and maximize business benefit while enabling material cost savings to be achieved by partner teams.
• Understand and explain complex technical and product issues to efficiently partner and drive adoption.
• Own core business processes for Performance Engineering organization such as operational reviews, annual and three-year planning, senior executive goal creation and monthly progress reporting.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree and/or Master's degree in Computer Science
• 10+ years of product management experience in defining, building and launching enterprise technology products
• 8+ years of experience in people management, running multidisciplinary product teams: product and program management, product development and QA
• Start-up or other entrepreneurial experience; bias for action and willingness to take risks
• Ability to think creatively, analyze quantitatively, problem-solve and prioritize
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to influence others
• Experience delivering initiatives from conception through completion on time
• Experience with products involving web services and service oriented architectures, candidates must think at scale
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree
• Background in infrastructure and systems management products or performance engineering
• Experience w/forecasting for global businesses, business cases, recommendations to executive mgmt., ROI modeling, P&L ownership
• Accomplished range of skills from high-level strategic thinking to detailed analysis
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams through influence versus direct management; excellent interpersonal skills
• Experience delivering large cross-functional projects by partnering across multiple teams globally
• Analytical, data-driven approach to problem solving
• High attention to detail and proven ability to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously
• Willingness to roll up one’s sleeves to get the job done
• Ability to change directions when presented new data
