Akamai’s Distributed Data Engineering team is looking for a talented and driven Senior Director of Engineering to lead and develop a hybrid team of Software, QA and Performance Engineers. This leader will be responsible for managing the leaders of development, dev QA and system performance teams and will need to act as a coach and mentor. Another key role for this position is to represent these systems to the rest of Akamai and help lead us to effective prioritization and investment in the growth and enhancement of these systems to meet Akamai’s business goals. We need a leader with a strong technical background who is able to focus on communication with our partners and stakeholders in other departments of Akamai as well as within the team.
The Distributed Data Engineering team is responsible for Big Data Systems at Akamai, which are among the largest in the world. A successful candidate will lead the team in designing and delivering the hyper-distributed, Big Data systems for Akamai’s planetary scale products and infrastructure. The technical challenges inherent to our business objectives require the team to extend the state of the art for distributed Big Data systems in terms of scale, reliability, performance, data consistency, and security.
As a Senior Director of Engineering you will be responsible for:
• Working closely with executive management to define priorities, direction and timelines.
• Communicating clearly and honestly with stakeholders about progress, roadblocks, and timelines.
• Recruiting, mentoring, and leading a team of talented leaders and engineers.
• Inspiring the team with technical vision, leading by example, and maintaining enthusiasm in tight-deadline situations.
• Fostering innovation in the team to develop fast, scalable and secure Big Data systems that can keep up with the demand from the Akamai Platform and Akamai’s customers.
• Talent and performance management for a large distributed, high performing team.
About the Team
The Distributed Data Engineering team (DDE) owns and operates the Big Data and communications systems that process, aggregate and store every Akamai network transaction for the purposes of analytics, billing, reporting, intelligence, decision support and provisioning. DDE systems currently ingest over 7PB/day of data and process over 3 trillion records per day. DDE has end-to-end responsibility for the research, design, development, testing and maintenance of one of the world’s largest communications and Big Data systems.
Required Education and Experience
Applicants must meet one of the following education and experience requirements:
• 15 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree in computer science or its equivalent or
• 12 years of relevant experience and a Master’s degree in computer science or
• 8 years of relevant experience and a PhD in computer science
Basic Qualifications
• 15+ years of software engineering experience.
• 12+ years experience leading engineering and development teams or projects.
• 5+ years experience working with Big Data and distributed systems.
Desired Qualifications
• Advanced degree in engineering or business management.
• Desire to work in and lead a fast-paced, dynamic, highly effective team.
• Knowledge of standard and repeatable software engineering practices.
• Knowledge of Databases and Computer & Network Security.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Experience and skill supporting technical user communities.
• Highly responsible, self-disciplined, motivational, creative, and confident.
