Director Performance - Kernel
You will lead a global team of experts who are responsible to triage production performance bottlenecks , identify and fix performance issues working with all engineering teams . This team will also provide innovative solutions to mitigate customer escalations as well as propose design changes and code fixes to meet our growing production traffic. Work with all product service teams, infrastructure engineering, capacity planning to design and develop state-of-art solution to existing performance problems, services to address gaps in core services, and performance analysis tools to allow dev teams to gain further insight into production runtime.You will manage a team of world-class, highly motivated software engineers and will be expected to both challenge and be challenged. In order to effectively manage this team, you will need exceptional leadership skills, a solid background in core Java, familiarity with performance tools, proficiency with agile development methodologies, and the ability to operate within short release cycles. The team also will build new services that help improve performance by reducing latencies, increasing throughput when necessary.
Responsibilities:
• Own end-to-end performance issues, identify bottlenecks and optimize product and service performance to improve end-user experience.
• Ensure that resources are available and help them firefight performance issues in production
• Guide the team to proactively find issues before they become major concerns
• Daily management of objectives, priorities, tradeoffs, risk and performance management of all reporting staff
• Provide technical leadership, career development, and mentoring to team members
• Assign areas of ownership, ensure engineers have clear priorities and adequate resources
• Maintain high morale and motivate engineers to go above and beyond
• Lead by example and build consensus across technology and products
• Initiate standards, guidelines and best practices
• Work efficiently with teams on other geo locations (teams in Hyderabad and North America)
• Work together with core product services, infrastructure engineering and capacity engineering teams to design and develop state-of-art performance analysis tools and services across different programming languages.
• Be a vocal advocate for technical excellence and help your team make good decisions
• Provide deepest visibility to what is going on for all services to determine scaling and utilization parameters for various service tiers.
• Solve hard software performance issues: Work with service owners closely to improve base performance (e.g. algorithm or architecture redesign), reduce resource consumption and shorten request latency.
• Encourage a data-driven culture to improve the performance, efficiency and scalability of Uber services and systems to help scale the company.
Qualifications:
12+ years software development experience with a distinguished track record on technically demanding projects
• Experience managing software development teams
• Proven track record in delivering complex projects on tight schedules
• Strong technical skills in Application performance
• Ability to motivate people, instill accountability and achieve results
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational aptitude, and time management skills
• Agile, proactive, comfortable working with ambiguous specifications and can prioritize on the fly
• Unparalleled troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as exemplified by clear bug/issue explanations, documentation of knowledge, mentoring ability, and comfort interacting with all levels of management
• BS or higher degree in Computer Science
• Outstanding attention to detail and communication skills
