Sponsored Products helps merchants, retail vendors, and brand owners succeed via native advertising that grows incremental sales of their products sold through Amazon. Our team optimizes the systems and ad placements to match demand with supply using a combination of machine learning, big data analytics, ultra-low latency high-volume engineering systems, and quantitative product focus. Our goals are to help buyers discover new products they love, be the most efficient way for Advertisers to meet their business objectives and continue to build a big, sustainable business that helps Amazon continuously innovate for all customers.
Core to our success is data science, applied to large data sets at high transaction rates (thousands of times per Amazon search and detail page view). As Director of Sponsored Products Data Science you will be responsible for the research activities that help us provide highly relevant ads to shoppers while growing advertisers’ businesses. You will coordinate and concentrate the work of multiple applied research and engineering teams to identify new areas for growth, predict key user behaviors and deliver automated decisions in real time. Your team is chartered with research core to our business and staffed with both applied ML researchers and a team of experienced builders of production machine learning systems. This ensures single threaded ownership of both how you learn behaviors and how models are executed in production. You will partner with other teams across Amazon’s machine learning, Search, Personalization and Economist communities to continue to accelerate results on behalf of our customers.
You are:
• An experienced leader of applied data science / machine learning research teams who can establish technical credibility quickly with elite machine learning and engineering practitioners.

• Own technical vision and direction
• Build and grow your team
• Collaborate on product direction: You’ll build and maintain strong relationships between engineering and partner disciplines (Product, User Experience, QA) to ensure that we're focused on delivering the right product for customers.
• Influence broadly as part of the Sponsored Products leadership team
• Own your own shop: We expect a healthy organization will be conducting a mix of long term research, shorter term applied research, and ongoing development and support of the productionalized versions of their research efforts.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• A PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Engineering, mathematics, or similar level of applied research knowledge gained through industry experience.
• 10+ years solving complex problems in some combination of predictive modeling, auctions, and machine learning.
• Experience managing and growing teams of applied researchers.
• Ability to balance long term "think big" research with practical business driving scrappy solutions.
• Great communication skills to explain complex concepts to teams with differing backgrounds, build trust and create engaging partnerships.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience managing engineering teams delivering machine learning production systems.
• Experience with advertising / Search / Personalization systems
