Cornerstone is American Express’s global Big Data ecosystem and a critical enabler of innovation and growth for the company. This function sits within Enterprise Digital and Analytics Group (EDA). The vision for Cornerstone is to centralize data across the company with strong built-in governance, democratize access to a broad user community and optimize company platforms through new synergies. The Director – Cornerstone Data Capabilities will be responsible for delivering on the vision and roadmap of Cornerstone by working closely with Cornerstone Process Owners, broader EDA team, and with Technologies and Business Partners to drive adoption, governance and user experience in the Big Data ecosystem. More specifically, the incumbent will:
• Own the end to end Batch Data Ingestion and Transformation capabilities roadmap including opportunities to innovate through automated data flow and reduced time to market for data delivery
• Own Data Quality capabilities that help drive user adoption by creating transparency and trust in data
• Own Central Data Management (CDM) capabilities that provides end to end metadata for the Cornerstone ecosystem
• Define product vision and strategy for the above capabilities in close partnership with technology teams and business stakeholders across the enterprise
• Collaborate with data governance, compliance and privacy teams to incorporate compliance and policy regulations for Cornerstone data warehouse (ex: GDPR)
• Create and foster a strong interaction model, ensuring alignment across Cornerstone Process and Capabilities team
• Co-ordinate communication, escalate and facilitate resolution of risks, issues and changes tied to the Product Backlog
• Evaluate external big data tools/capabilities landscape in data management to assess applicability for Cornerstone
Qualifications
The successful candidate should demonstrate strong platform, data and capability acumen. The position requires the ability to collaborate with a wide range of partners at all leadership levels to create strategic solutions to complex and unchartered new capability/technology roadmap.
This position also requires the following:
• A good balance of technical knowledge and business acumen with a proven track record of driving delivery of end to end data capabilities in Big Data space with “customer-first” mindset. 5+ years of work experience in data management/big data technology is required
• Deep understanding of Hadoop Stack, MapReduce framework and big data tools & utilities (Spark, Hive, PySpark, Drill)
• Expert in Distributed RDBMS, NoSQL Databases and big data platform architecture
• Strong analytical background with prior experience using digital platforms, advanced data mining techniques
• Experience creating and executing a strategy from inception to roll-out, including creating a multi-year roadmap and tracking/communicating progress against it
• Strong communication skills combined with an ability to interact effectively with senior leaders, data consumers and technologies
• Self-motivated individual who is able to combine problem-resolution and critical thinking skills with an ability to apply a business lens to recommendations
• Proven ability to adjust quickly to shifting priorities, multiple demands, ambiguity and rapid change
• 5+ years of experience in Product Management/Development in working with technology teams and strong understanding of Agile principles.
• MBA or related field recommended, with a BA/BS preferably in Computer Science or technical field
