Accounting Policy & Advisory Manager
Job Summary
Performs technical accounting research on investment and non-investment topics and provides interpretation of ambiguous and complex accounting literature to address technical accounting questions related to Global Investments, Treasury, and other selected business partners and special projects related to selected areas of expertise, in accordance with established policies and procedures; works closely with Financial Services personnel in the accounting and reporting review and analysis of significant, and highly complex business transactions
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Assists with managing the Accounting Policy workload and supporting less experienced team members with advice and direction
On selected investment and non-investment topics, leads USGAAP and STAT accounting standards implementation efforts; manages and supports the implementation effort by providing advice and direction to the participating financial services and non-finance functions
Works with minimal supervision on the accounting issues resolution process and the research of technical accounting and reporting issues; advises the senior leadership team on technical accounting matters related to US GAAP, STAT, and other bases of accounting (Japanese GAAP and/or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), as applicable)
Coordinates review and analyses with Aflac Japan team members for JGAAP accounting and consistency with US GAAP, STAT, and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), as applicable
Interprets new, existing, proposed, and finalized accounting pronouncements to determine the potential impact to the organization; provides summaries of accounting impact to senior management
Plays a key partnership role in monitoring IASB developments and convergence with U.S. GAAP, and the development of data requirements under IFRS, as applicable
Keeps abreast of internal and external developments that could impact corporate accounting and reporting, and participates in the drafting of formal comments to the various standard-setting groups including the IASB, FASB, NAIC, and SEC as appropriate
Communicates accounting policies and positions both verbally and in writing with senior management, external and internal auditors
Collaborates with senior management and others across business units to strategically enhance, revise and implement policies and controls; develops recommendations regarding the adoption and implementation of accounting changes for the Company and presents to senior management; assists in development and training through continuing education presentations for company employees
Assumes a lead role on creation and maintenance of the Corporate Accounting Policy Manual and accounting checklists; continually evaluates departmental processes and recommends process improvements; provides expertise in recommending enhancements and/or additions to the Accounting Policy Manual
Assists in representing the company externally on issues relating to accounting policy through participation in industry-wide associations and related organizational meetings
Travels to New York office or Japan, as needed
Performs other related duties as required
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree and eight years of professional job-related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Master’s Degree preferred
CPA or other similar professional designation (i.e. CFA) preferred
Job Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of investment accounting and working understanding of key corporate accounting topics
Strong technical accounting research skills paired with ability to independently drive expertise improvement in technical accounting topics
Knowledge of the functions and use of the Microsoft office suite of products and their application
Broad knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), SEC, and other federal regulations, Statutory Accounting Principles (SSAP), state insurance department statutes, and other state regulations, with an emphasis on insurance and/or investment accounting
Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting and financial systems user applications (SAP preferred), including input/output processing and complex system concepts
Knowledge and demonstrated experience performing moderately complex financial analysis and related valuation methodologies, systems and quantitative business-based analysis, metrics, and experimental designs
Ability to prepare statistical studies and trend analysis using internal and external information to demonstrate relevant changes and recommend improvements or solutions
Excellent presentation, oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills to effectively interact with Aflac’s senior management, and internal and external business contacts; and the ability to exhibit and maintain professionalism in accordance with corporate standard
