Position Overview
The Senior Communications Specialist (SCS) is responsible for a wide range of communication functions in support of the Corporate Communication team’s mission.
On the Internal Communication side this role contributes to development and dissemination of messaging to employees that conveys leadership’s business strategy, reinforces our corporate mission and our unique culture, and highlights our strategic progress. The Internal Communications target audiences include all Legg Mason Corporate’s business units and departments and our affiliate partner firm employees around the world.
As internal and external corporate communications become increasingly integrated with strategic and tactical brand-building campaigns, the Senior Specialist will support external PR efforts and Corporate messaging including delivery of messages into our social media channels.
The SCS will actively source, write and publish content through multiple mediums including email and our intranet (LMEX) and share responsibility for managing the content features and editorial calendar on the LMEX home page. Familiarity with Teamsite and SharePoint is required for managing intranet site content. The preparation of LMEX Spotlight features will also require basic competency in Adobe Photoshop. In addition, the SCS will partner with LM Technology on updates and edits to the site requiring more technical expertise.
The SCS will act as relationship lead with specific (tbd) departments and guide them in development of integrated internal communication plans. The candidate will engage with these business partners through planning and writing support on specific messaging and take the lead in executing on approved annual communication strategies.
PR responsibilities for the SCS include supporting the Media Relations team in managing submissions of press releases through the PACE (Compliance) system, pushing press releases out to news channels and the LM internet Newsroom, and working with PR Newswire to compile daily news coverage of LM and affiliates. Training on the above processes will be provided.
For all internal and external communications, the SCS will be expected to review and analyze activity metrics and campaign results and then apply insights to drive ongoing improvement in content creation, management and editorial decisions.
Finally, expectations for this role assume the ability to quickly become familiar with all aspects of Legg Mason’s business including Sales, Product Development, our Shared Services departments, our affiliates, our Corporate Social Responsibility activities, Diversity & Inclusion and our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). General knowledge of the financial industry, specific knowledge of the asset management business and a strong grasp of competitive intelligence will also be important to success in this role.
Key Responsibilities:
Internal Communications Support:
• Provide guidance and planning for communications requests from business partners
• Maintain communication calendar, research/develop potential stories, write draft copy and proofread all messaging
• Create electronic communications (e.g. emails and Spotlights) using TeamSite/SharePoint and prep for distribution
• Reach out across the firm globally to source, write and produce content for LMEX Spotlight and Inside LM Global
• Edit photo assets using Adobe Photoshop for use in emails, LMEX and Facebook
Corporate Communications Support:
• Share responsibilities as backup for liaising with internal clients on the development, creation and distribution of time-sensitive communications
• Work with PR Team on a daily basis to create & distribute “LM in the News”
• Manage Compliance approval of press releases/other content through the internal PACE system
• Respond quickly to the numerous ad hoc communications requests
• Prep video messages for employee consumption
• Training to be provided for working with Brightcove video distribution system, including loading video files, creating video landing pages and obtaining viewer metrics.
• Assist with our support of Global Business Continuity (GBC) by posting messages on LMEX and updating the GBC website
• Provide support for Quarterly Earnings & Town Hall
Qualifications:
• Excellent writing skills and interest in sourcing and composing email and web content
• Strong digital skills including knowledge of MS Office and O365, TeamSite, SharePoint 2013, Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe/Omniture Analytics
• Professional, collaborative workstyle and personal accountability for results
• Strong attention to detail
• Experience with all facets of video production
