Summary
Director, Human Centered and Behavioral Design, drives the practice of understanding human needs, Human Centered Design and behavioral design specific to Thrivent’s Wise with Money Journey and how Thrivent can successfully implement HCD and Behavioral Design across Christian Engagement.
This role will collaborate across Christian Engagement, partnering with designers embedded in CE priorities as well as with other areas of Thrivent (e.g. Research, Strategic Planning, Brand and Marketing, Digital) and external experts to research, identify test, learn and scale HCD and Behavior Design initiatives across Christian Engagement priorities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Know Thrivent’s mission, execute on our strategy, and shape the culture: Articulate Thrivent’s history, mission, values, philosophy, corporate/ownership structure, The Thrivent Way, and enterprise strategy. Activities could include:
• Consults across the organization to successfully innovate and transform Thrivent’s serve first business model
• Utilize observational research including interviews and workshops, internal and external research activities to generate conceptual frameworks and formulate insights to drive Christian Engagement strategy
• Design and conduct human-centered studies to successfully formulate and implement solutions to problems involving both analytical and creative elements for issues with significant financial and operational impact to the organization
• Comprehend and articulate research findings in a compelling and persuasive manner to achieve stakeholder support
• Champion the 5S research model and how it applies to churches, leaders and individuals
• Immerse in Thrivent’s WWMJ research and experience
• Demonstrating growth in cultural competence – with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion – to build toward inclusive and healthy work environments
• Immersing in new Christian markets for Thrivent to understand how we could potentially serve these communities
• Understanding and embodying Thrivent’s core leadership capacities: Delivering the Thrivent Promise, Leading Change, Making Wise Decisions, Driving Results, Growing Talent.
• Utilize best practices related to HCD and behavioral design methods. Exercise the practice of Service Design through human-centered methods of design thinking to identify ways Thrivent can help Christians be wise with money.
• Identify unmet needs for Christians on their Wise With Monday Journey, and lead the creation of new service concepts and business strategies to better meet those needs
• Work with CE priorities to conceive new concepts or experience strategies to meet those needs.
• Conduct observational research, interviews and workshops; partner with research to undertake internal and external research activities; formulate insights related to the synthesis of the research data;
• Work with CE areas to create tangible, compelling design prototypes that help CE teams develop great WWMJ solutions, ensure desirability, and improve Christians’ contentment, confidence and generosity with money.
• Ensure Christian Engagement and Thrivent does the necessary learning across the organization to truly determine how we can help Christians be more content, confident and generous with their money. Helps to facilitate retrospectives for design/test/learn. Shares learning broadly across Thrivent.
• Collaborate across Thrivent and externally: Activities could include: Partner across Thrivent to collaborate on designing a seamless WWMJ experience and the associated roadmaps
◦ Understand Thrivent capabilities and how HCD could be leveraged to serve new Christian communities.
◦ Expand and leverage external relationships both within the US and globally to capitalize on opportunities and efforts of like-minded groups;
◦ Operating within negative space, recognizing patterns, identifying trends, and seeking to discover by listening deeply and intuitively, recognizing personal confirmation biases, recency biases, expertise biases, and sunk-cost biases
Scope of the Role
• Lead the implementation of HCD and behavioral design that will create new Christian Engagement opportunities across Thrivent, advising and consulting with leaders on their business development approach.
• Work effectively, with minimal supervision in the transformational “white space” – areas and opportunities not being addressed by core business units, or opportunities that cross multiple divisions and functions
• Work with leaders to influence them to incorporate HCD and behavioral design into their Christian Engagement business development priorities.
• Identify when an opportunity is ripe for scaling into a larger priority or business
• Projects and priorities will have significant financial and operational impact to the organization
Required Job Qualifications
• College degree required
• MBA or other advanced degrees strongly preferred
• Substantial relevant work experience in human centered design field with experience in human-centered methods of Design Thinking and behavioral design to identify unmet needs/
• Demonstrated track record of creating new service concepts or business strategies to meet those needs that will translate well into money-related experiences.
• Experience using human centered design from vision and strategy to execution and scaling
• Adept at facilitating and engaging large groups appropriately through the experience strategy and design processes
• Significant experience leading collaborative and matrixed teams and partners (internal and external) to deliver solutions for successful adoption. Demonstrated experience managing complex strategic programs and initiatives
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and self-manage complex programs with minimal direction and oversight
• Demonstrated ability to lead and influence others from across the organization, including executives and others at higher levels
• Demonstrated ability to leverage external experts
• Significant experience in financial services industry and/or fraternal benefit societies, or expertise in related industries.
• Significant experience in working with multiple new business development channels and tools recommended
• Experience in leading innovation and influencing others to embrace ambiguity
Preferred Job Qualifications
• Needs to be comfortable with regular overnight travel up to several times per month
• Needs to be comfortable working in the US as well as globally
• Needs to be comfortable discovering and developing key relationship with external leaders; networking in unchartered territory
• Needs to be comfortable challenging the status quo and influencing without authority; persuading leaders to take action
