Position Profile – Who are we looking for?
The Payroll Manager manages a team of three associates responsible for multi-state, monthly and semi-monthly payrolls for over 3,400 U.S. employees. This role prioritizes work for payroll, ensures timely and accurate processing, reviews work and provides direction while maintaining a strong working knowledge of the payroll process and payroll systems. As the leader of the payroll team, the payroll manager develops the associates on the team, evaluates their performance and builds relationships with the business units and departments that payroll supports.
What will I do?
• Prioritizes department workload and offers continuous improvement ideas for the purpose of maximizing efficiency and meeting operational requirements.
• Identifies and prioritizes technology enhancements in the Workday system including managing the payroll portion of any upgrades.
• Focuses on understanding processes and controls and implementing changes in the payroll process, as needed.
• Participates in knowledge transfer and cross trains the payroll team on all aspects of the payroll process.
• Creates an environment where the payroll team is empowered to take ownership and make decisions ensuring information is shared in a clear, concise and collaborative manner through a climate of trust.
• Understands the information requests from business unit and corporate resource departments for the purpose of delivering analysis of their compensation costs.
• Reviews the process and procedures for special bonus payments, which are outside of monthly and semi-monthly payrolls.
• Manages year-end W-2 process.
• Reviews general ledger account reconciliations and investigates differences.
• Works closely with third party payroll tax provider to ensure taxes are accurately withheld, reported and remitted.
• Responds to written and verbal inquiries for the purpose of providing information and/or direction.
• Develops and evaluates performance of the payroll team.
• Ensures a close working partnership with the Finance, HR and Operations to help refine practices and deliver efficiency in the daily interaction between these groups.
• Lead key team or department-wide projects to improve overall performance and support strategic initiatives.
Candidate Profile – What we need from you?
• 7+ years of Payroll experience
• Bachelor’s Degree preferred
• Knowledge of Workday payroll a strong plus.
• Proven track record successfully leading and motivating a team.
• Ability to handle highly confidential and time sensitive information is essential.
• Exceptional client service.
• Critical thinking and problem solving within a team environment.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
• Ability to manage volatile and stressful situations.
• Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
• Excellent communication with Baird associates and outside parties (accountants, banks and auditors).
