Job Description:
This is a strategic managerial role within the Discover Student Portfolio Management team with specific responsibility for developing and implementing new strategies using customer level information and models. Specifically, the responsibilities will focus on developing underwriting strategies for Discover Student Loans using borrower bureau information, school attributes and cosigner bureau data.
The person will explore and apply new methodology to develop a deaccessioning infrastructure while using efficient trade-offs among business metrics such as credit losses, receivables, and profit. The infrastructure will include many components of segmentation, predictive models, optimization schemes and strategies. This person will also be responsible for managing the operations relationship for non-systematic strategies, marketing relationships for special programs, and responsible for certain compliance activities.
The successful candidate will have the analytical abilities to translate business objectives into analytical framework and to solve them by optimally balancing different metrics. He/she will work in a cross-functional environment with Decision Science, Marketing, Risk Systems Management, and other functional teams. A hands-on risk manager is sought with a high level of proven analytic experience and has the proven ability to deliver complex projects in a highly cross-functional role. Key deliverables (performance measures)
• Responsible for developing student loans underwriting strategies using customer level information, segmentation and predictive models. Achieve multiple business objectives by using optimal trade-offs among credit losses, receivables and profit.
• Design and implement comprehensive tests to evaluate financial impacts of different actions and strategies.
• Facilitate implementation discussion with operational centers to ensure accuracy and quality of execution.
• Reviewing and tracking strategy performance.
• Responsible for maintaining policy quality and integrity by conducting periodic accounts reviews.
• Build, lead and develop a team of highly skilled credit risk analysts. Includes recruitment and setting of appropriate objectives and effective development plans for the team.
• Promote a risk-aware culture, ensure efficient and effective risk and compliance management practices by adhering to require standards and processes.
• Minimum 4 years of experience with statistical tools, profit analysis, data mining and reporting.

Skills Required:
• Solid understanding of portfolio dynamics to determine profitability, loss, and balance attrition inter-relationships.
• Extensive SAS & SQL programming skills in PC, UNIX or mainframe environments.
• Demonstrate a high level of inquisitiveness, initiative and critical thinking to formulate business issues into analytical problems and devise actionable solution.
Competencies
• Strong analytic skills including statistical theory and practices, financial analysis and reporting generation.
• Creative thinking and problem solving skills.
• Good knowledge of the industry, risk management practices and business metrics.
• Extensive computer skills including in-depth knowledge and proficiency in SQL, SAS, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work under own initiative with ability to set priorities in a performance driven environment.
• Demonstrated management skills, including ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, follow through on completion of high-profile projects, and people management skills.
• Master’s degree in quantitative disciplines (economics, econometrics, mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, business management, etc.) preferred
• Prior experience in financial services with emphasis on consumer credit analysis or fraud analysis preferred.
