The Director, Business Management role sits within AFSG Business Administration & Analytics team and is responsible for leading and managing the overall business management function for American Funds (AF) Service. This role will manage senior managers and associates who provide reporting and analysis services for use in business decision-making to the AF senior leadership group.
Responsibilities:
• Guides business planning
◦ Drives business planning and forecasting processes for AF service; ensures reporting and analytics support and/or influence decision-making.
◦ Participates in the enterprise business planning process.
◦ Translates strategic plans into operational initiatives.
• Participates in appropriate governance committees established to manage and to provide oversight of projects, initiatives, and/or the business.
• Manages and is accountable for AF Service business analysis capabilities.
◦ Supports senior business leaders by building stronger analytical capabilities into management processes.
◦ Ensures information (i.e., statistical or analytical models) support business initiatives or other business needs, and can be integrated into decision-making.
◦ Ensures consistency of management information through data governance processes.
• Develops and maintains an effective team. This includes:
◦ Manages the environment:
# Provides a global strategic context for associates when sharing information and making decisions.
# Leads broad organization change efforts including planning and communication.
# Builds and supports strong teams within and across functional areas
# May represent the Company as a key internal or external contact regarding significant matters.
# Communicates with other members of management to resolve complex business issues or set future planning direction/strategy.
# Responsible for championing and promoting new business initiatives and influencing acceptance of change.
# Sets the tone in business groups and ensures Capital’s philosophy is reflected throughout the organization through constant modeling and support of our core values and beliefs.

# Leads the development/improvement of processes; thinks holistically to achieve the right level of effectiveness and efficiencies.
# Integrates up-to-date business/industry knowledge and an understanding of Capital’s business model into decision-making.
# Thinks globally and strategically; considers cross-function and cross-border issues and impacts when managing local business issues and priorities.
# Manages risk and internal controls.
◦ Manages people:
# Manages performance of senior managers in the group and assures effective performance management of each team member.
# Interviews and assesses candidates for manager, senior manager positions. Makes hiring decisions for senior manager positions.
# Influences compensation decisions including salary increase, transfer, and promotion recommendations for senior managers, managers and team managers.
# Reviews/approves associate promotions for assigned functions.
# Develops the skills and capabilities of assigned associates, to include succession planning and ensuring a sufficient talent pipeline.
# Appropriately applies Human Resources guidelines and procedures (works closely with Human Resources when appropriate).
# Effectively manages a wide variety and large volume of associate relations activities
# Ensures effective approaches are in place to provide sufficient motivation and engagement drivers for senior managers and associates.
◦ Manages projects
# Sponsors broad, high impact group, business or multiple location projects.
# Initiates and prioritizes projects using sound business acumen.
• Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Experience leading & managing a team and/or function
• Demonstrates initiative by identifying issues and recommending solutions on complex and broad matters.
• Maintains in-depth knowledge of confidentiality and privacy expectations and controls.
• Demonstrates ability to effectively plan and manage the work of a broad business area to achieve results consistent with broad business objectives.
• Demonstrates ability to influence senior business leaders on strategic business matters.
• Demonstrates sound judgment in resolving matters of very high complexity.
• Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and analytical skills in areas of high complexity & ambiguity.
• Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills with a diverse group of associates and senior business leaders.
• Demonstrates effectiveness in leading/facilitating with senior business leaders on broad/controversial topics inside and outside the organization.
• Demonstrates ability to plan processes and work across broad, diverse groups to assure work is completed in a timely manner.
• Demonstrates expert knowledge of analysis processes, financial acumen, analysis techniques, planning techniques, and data warehousing and reporting tools. Exhibits knowledge in current and possible internal and external future policies, practices, trends, technology and information affecting the department/business area and overall organization
