Director, State & Local Tax
Overview:
Manages all significant aspects of the State & Local Tax function at Mastercard, with a particular focus on dispute resolution, tracking and influencing pending legislation, participating in the development of tax strategy, including using legal means to minimize the Company’s tax liability through the Candidate’s thorough knowledge of state tax laws and regulations. The Candidate will also review provision calculations and tax returns to ensure that the financial reporting for Mastercard properly reflects its income tax expense and liabilities.
Role:
• Facilitate resolution of state and local audits by developing our strategy to defend tax positions through performing tax research, coordinating with Business Partners and external advisers, and ownership of written and spoken communications with tax authorities
• Lead tax planning initiatives while ensuring we remain compliant with enacted and pending legislation which can impact the Company's state and local tax footprint
• Review interim and year-end state and local provision, in accordance with ASC 740
• Review of apportionment details supporting state returns and planning initiatives
• Review of state and local returns - which are prepared by a Big Four accounting firm
• Conduct a review of current sales and use tax processes and assist with transition initiatives currently underway
• Provides guidance and leadership to tax department staff and outside consultants while employing strong project management skills
• Serves as a consultant to Finance and other Business Partners by providing tax information and advice
• Responsible for adherence to policies that create a strong internal control environment under Sarbanes-Oxley
• Interface with members of the tax department and other colleagues within the organization on tax planning initiatives including mergers and acquisitions, structuring of transactions and other tax opportunities permitted under relevant tax law when necessary
All About You:
• Requirements include a Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Economics, Political Science or Accounting. A professional designation, such as CPA, MBA, JD, LLM, MST.
• Demonstrated and extensive knowledge in corporate taxation with an emphasis on dispute resolution, coupled with tax provision experience; overall work experience will be the overriding factor when considering years of experience
• Big 4 accounting or law firm background and prior corporate tax department experience
• Ability to interpret and apply tax law
• Proven ability to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals in a fast-paced, changing environment
• Ability to organize, manage and work effectively to accomplish multiple tasks
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel specifically) and ability to navigate within tax software (Corptax preferred)
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in groups to complete time-sensitive projects within internal and external deadlines
• Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work with people at all levels in the organization
