Job Description
Making and maintaining national reporter and producer relationships is job number one with this role. This role will mimic a media relations guru at a PR firm – finding story ideas within the business and creating a vision for sharing those stories with consumers through national media outlets.
If you ever wanted to know what it would look like to work for an 87-year-old startup backed by the legacy of a major brand, this is it. We’re aggressive, tenacious pursuers of media to help tell our proactive story of innovation on behalf of our customers. From drones to artificial intelligence and the future of personal transportation, we have great stories to engage consumers. Plus, feature stories to share how much we care for our local communities. Yes, at an insurance company.
Maintaining relationships will be key and you’ll have the freedom to create those connections. Sure, there’s some news release writing involved, but not nearly as much as there used to be. We’re storytellers and we want someone who is ready to help jump in and build our story with us – engage senior leaders and facilitate media interviews to land national coverage. Are you in?
Key Responsibilities
• Make and maintain relationships with national media contacts.
• Find and promote stories from within the business to share externally.
• Think strategically about stories that show us as a caring company.
• Collaborate with social media team and consumer marketing divisions to build surround-sound communication plans that showcase Allstate as an innovative and caring company.
• Listen and learn about multiple business units and new products and always be thinking of how it fits into the corporate narrative.
• Be nimble on-the-go and ready at any minute to pivot when necessary to achieve success on deadline.
Job Qualifications
• Five years of previous public relations experience, including direct contact with media including pitching, writing, interview coaching. On-camera spokesperson skills preferred.
• Media Relations: Ability to work with news media outlets and social platforms to place stories that build and enhance a company’s reputation. Understands when to involve others to mitigate issues that could negatively impact reputation.
• Journalism Background: Previous experience in a corporate or agency environment, or experience as a reporter or producer, with proven success in pitching story ideas and moving them to publication.
• Writing: Knowledge and application of the Associated Press Style Guide to prepare error-free communications.
• Creative Thinking: Generates innovative solutions to achieve business outcomes. Finds story ideas out of complex topics with an ability to retell the story to a mass audience.
• Presentation Skills:Delivers presentations effectively and with confidence. Ability to think and perform spontaneously.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing or related field preferred.
In Corporate Relations, our backgrounds range from journalism to business, from strategic philanthropy to academia, and from research to education. All have thrived in a collaborative environment where they learned from each other.
The candidate(s) offered this position will be required to submit to a background investigation, which includes a drug screen.
