Title: Assistant Vice President – Fixed Income Portfolio Manager
Location: Boston, MA
Overview of Group:
• The Portfolio Management group at John Hancock Life Insurance Company is responsible for managing a portfolio of fixed income securities, alternative investments, and derivative instruments to support a variety of insurance and wealth management products sold globally and held in the General Account of the Company as well as for a few separately managed accounts and 3rd party institutional clients. Total assets under management are approximately US$90 billion.
Summary:
• In the context of investing for an insurance company General Account, the incumbent in this position will perform day to day Portfolio Management functions, including, but not limited to, managing portfolios to liability-based benchmarks, hedging daily asset and liability transactions, determining best portfolio fit for a given investment based on underlying investment attributes and portfolio needs. Additionally, the incumbent will work with the Trading and Credit teams to develop trade ideas and their execution. Must have experience with relative value analysis/concepts, credit risk assessments and fixed income analytics to support decision making. Incumbent will also provide quantitative support to our Industry Credit Teams on an as needed basis. As a senior member of the Portfolio Management team, you would work with both internal and external clients on portfolio strategy, report back to clients on portfolio performance and provide market commentary. In addition, this leadership role may lead to managing more junior members of the team in their reporting responsibilities such as Economic Value Added, quarterly activity, etc. The incumbent will also provide market updates to ALM and other internal groups within the company as needed to aid strategic investment decisions.
Requirements:
• Strong quantitative skills
• Experience with and strong understanding of fixed income analytics and portfolio management
• Experience with and understanding of fixed income markets, securities and sectors
• Understanding of derivative investments used for interest rate hedging
• Familiarity with credit underwriting and credit ratings
• Familiarity with areas/topics that impact the investing environment within an insurance company such as ALM, LICAT capital, RBC, and tax
• Familiarity with compliance concepts related to managing client money
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Experience with performance/attribution analysis
• Ability to make presentations to both internal and external parties communicating such things as the firm’s investment philosophy, portfolio holdings and market conditions
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment both within the team as well as across various areas within Manulife
• Strong technical skills in using Bloomberg, MS Excel and MS Access and familiarity working with data related to fixed income securities. Experience with Bloomberg API desired.
• Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with various levels within the organization
• Strong team skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment
• Must be well organized and detailed in approach with good follow through
• Strong communication skills both written and verbal
• Minimum of 10 years of applicable experience
• B.S. required, CFA preferred
