Job Description
Reporting to the Associate Chief, Underwriting Research and Development, the Director, Underwriting R&D will play a leadership role, accountable for providing underwriting subject matter expertise and leadership on an agile cross – functional development team comprised of actuaries, operations specialists, data scientists, and developers. This role will require proven research and development capabilities, out of the box thinking, and creative problem solving.
Key Accountabilities
Individual Accountabilities:
• Work with Senior Product Owner to lead the development of a new insurance underwriting capabilities that are both instant and non-invasive for a large segment of our customers
• Work closely with actuaries and data scientists to rapidly problem solve and prototype new ideas
• Research, analyze, and make recommendations on the effectiveness of new data sources and underwriting techniques
• Prioritize project work, focusing on generating the most value for the business
• Keep abreast of external factors that may affect underwriting (e.g. medical and technical advancements, industry rules, compliance and regulations, etc, for example: use of consumer data)
• Keep abreast of competitor actions and industry trends
• Design and execute protective value studies, working closely with Medical Directors and Chief Underwriter
• Analyze underwriting data and claims experience if applicable
Key Shared Accountabilities:
• Work with internal stakeholders to recommend and implement underwriting philosophy and guideline changes per established company standards and approval processes
• Oversee pilots for new data sources and technology offered by external vendors
• Clearly communicate results and progress to senior management
Job Requirement:
• Extensive knowledge and experience with all aspects of underwriting risk assessment - medical, non-medical, financial
• Knowledge of clinical medicine, human pathology, and ability to draw conclusions appropriate for underwriting based on clinical research and medical studies and translating to formal recommendations
• Expertise reviewing and interpreting medical research
• Understanding of life insurance strategies, distribution models, products, concepts, and pricing standards
• Experience with large scale IT implementations, communicating requirements, and developing test plans
• Highly engaged: able to self-manage work, problem solve, and push projects forward where no established process exists under deadline pressure
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written (technical) communication skills
• Proven analytical and problem-solving ability; capable of performing complex analysis on innovative concepts
• Prior experience working with actuaries, medical, and data scientists
• Excellent MS Office Skills, SQL, Python, and VBA in Excel
• Undergraduate and/or post graduate degree in science, medical or related field or minimum of 10 years experience in underwriting and/or medical research experience
• FALU/FLMI a plus

Working Condition:
• Occasional travel required
