The Reinsurance Accountant works under the general supervision of the Reinsurance Accounting Supervisor. Responsible for organizing and processing reinsurance claims, invoices, and statement of accounts by accurately inputting accounting and claims data into the reinsurance system. Communicates with reinsurance brokers, auditors, banks, and other organizations to answer inquires, resolve problems, and monitor status of reinsurance transactions and payments. Requires the ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Essential Duties
• Accumulates needed data and information for Shelter Insurance Companies assumed and ceded reinsurance contracts.
• Uses personal computer tools, such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access for data analysis to remedy errors or perform calculations for journal entries.
• Prepares and files other quarterly schedules and reports as required.
• Calculates, prepares, reconciles and corrects journal entries or journal data for assigned companies.
• Maintains accounting records for specified companies and is responsible for accuracy and timeliness of the data.
• Maintains files and records of past financial history for specified companies and assist auditors and company personnel in retrieving and interpreting the data.
• Responsible for the timely and accurate recording of premium and claim activity for Shelter Reinsurance Company and ensures the proper approval of payments.
• Analyzes assumed, pool and ceded reinsurance data and makes payments or receipts of the funds and processes entries to the general ledger for the transactions.
• Responsible for the timely and accurate recording of reinsurance statements of account and invoices into the reinsurance administration system.
• Communicates with reinsurance brokers, auditors, banks, and other organizations to answer inquiries, resolve problems, and monitor status of reinsurance transactions and payments.
• Maintain effective communications with internal and external personnel.
• Responsible for efficient and timely performance of all duties and must have the ability to keep a steady work schedule with regular, predictable attendance to ensure steady work flow with minimal disruptions to department schedule and deadlines.
• Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned by the Manager of Financial Reporting.

Skills
• Superior oral and written communication skills, as well as good interpersonal skills required for frequent interactions with outside firms and representatives.
• Mathematical skills and analytic ability to read technical language, enter applicable information into the reinsurance system, and understand fundamental accounting principles in order to input and reconcile reinsurance transactions.
• Ability to accept supervision, follow instructions and work in a harmonious manner with co-workers and supervisors.
• Ability to use a personal computer with speed and accuracy and superior knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office tools required. Windows computer environment, Internet Browser, and Lotus Notes experience recommended.
• Ability to work additional hours to meet required deadlines during seasonal periods.
• Ability to maintain schedules and work well with others.
• Ability to perform essential functions of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Training
• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or applicable accounting experience.
Experience
• Minimum of one-year successful completion of accounting related experience.
Responsibilities/Principal Accountabilities
• Works under general supervision and arranges own schedule to meet daily and monthly objectives and deadlines.
• Accountable for maintaining accurate general ledger data for assigned company or companies and complying with established record retention policies.
• Accountable for reconciliation of transactions to source data or systems.
• Responsible for the timely and accurate completion of financial statements, investment schedules, other management reports and regulatory reports.
• Accountable for notifying supervisor about system problems, out of balance situations and providing assistance with fixing the problems.
• Responsible for the inquiry and research of out of balances and must be able to work the issue through to completion.
• Responsible for the timely and accurate recording of premium and claim activity for Shelter Reinsurance Company and ensures proper approval of payments.
