Has overall responsibility for planning, directing and coordinating Employee Benefit Underwriting operations. Oversees the development of underwriting rules, subject to Senior Management approval and the implementation of procedures for the conduct of daily work activities and to ensure the successful achievement of the company's goals. Directs, monitors and participates in the selection, training and continuing development of personnel to adequately provide best in class underwriting service. Maintains current knowledge of underwriting and pricing strategy, technology, laws and regulations pertinent to the Group Life, Dental, Disability and Vision business.
Essential Duties
• Talent Management & Leadership - plans, directs and control underwriting activities including all human resource management functions; determines the most effective staffing levels, scope of employee responsibility and ensures the hiring and development of employees in compliance with corporate guidelines. Develop and maintain an engaged and accountable workforce with focus on continuous process improvement to support sales and profitability. Develop and maintain a fair and equitable work environment. Perform short range planning and participates in long range planning for Underwriting, Distribution and the Employee Benefit division.
• Risk Selection - directs all underwriting activities for Employee Benefits. Ensures the proper selection of risks in the development of sound and effective underwriting policies and practices and the establishment of controls to ensure cases are underwritten within these requirements.
• Quality & Time Service - directs the overall service provided by the underwriting area. Ensures that all requests are being handled efficiently and within established quality and time service requirements.
• Industry Knowledge – maintains a current knowledge of pre-sale and renewal business trends regarding existing and emerging system technology and identify processes/approaches that will assist in the acquisition and implementation of new business.
• Reinsurance Functions – effectively manages risks with all reinsurance partners. Participates in negotiations with various reinsurance organizations to meet AXA E.B.’s existing and projected business. Works closely with appropriate internal and external parties regarding the development of the contract and financial arrangements.
• Effective Working Relationships - establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all internal and external business partners to ensure support and attainment of goals and objectives.
• Training & Development – directs and participates in the development of new underwriting guidelines and procedures, communicates changes and updates to underwriters and sales distribution personnel.
• Special Projects – serves as a member of various committees, task forces, etc. on special projects related to AXA Employee Benefits. May work with external vendors to support area initiatives.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
• 10 Years experience within a comparable position
• An understanding of Group Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment, Group Dental, Group Long Term Disability, Group Short Term Disability and Group Vision products
• Knowledge of pre-sale, post-sale, amendment and renewal underwriting practices
• Established relationships within the employee benefit insurance industry
• Proven managerial and leadership skills with the demonstrated ability to operate in a demanding and evolving environment
• Bachelor's degree
• Industry designations
