The Role
As the Underwriting Director, Executive Benefits (Individual Contributor), you will provide subject matter expertise on underwriting assignments and projects. You will be responsible for underwriting life insurance applications within Lincoln Financial Group’s Life Executive Benefits area with designated approval limit of up to $20,000,000 to age 85. You will evaluate and assesses complex risks to determine whether to accept an insurance application and determines the appropriate coverage/risk. This position will adhere to medical, non-medical, and financial guidelines while determining an individual's insurability.
Responsibilities
• Maintains knowledge on Executive Benefits COLI/BOLI and multi-life Business Insurance, assesses the impact, and collaborates with senior management to incorporate new trends and developments in current and future solutions.
• Evaluates and underwrites life insurance applications making determinations of the terms, coverage, and rating classification within his/her designated approval limit of $20,000,000 to age 85.
• Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazard, and financial background.
• Enhances departmental outcomes by sharing knowledge with team members and providing advice on complex underwriting determinations.
• Identifies trends/issues and offers solutions on complex issues, including appeals and exceptions to meet customer needs while ensuring alignment to business strategies.
• Takes ownership of highly complex case load to proactively communicate with customer and other departments to enhance relationships and facilitate placement of highly visible business.
• Provides second signature reviews for any level underwriter for all amounts up to and including their maximum designated approval limit of $20,000,000.
• Designs and leads effective presentations for customers and distribution partners.
• Represents the company at industry and customer meetings.
• Negotiates sensitive, high-impact underwriting decisions with key distribution partners.
• Leads project teams.
• Mentors underwriting team members and serves as a subject matter expert in one or more financial and/or medical topics related to underwriting and risk assessment; conducts trainings and/or prepares written documentation in field of expertise.
Education
• 4 Year Bachelor's degree or 4+ years of equivalent work experience
• Underwriting including medical, non-medical and financial risk selection
• FALU, FLMI, CLU preferred but not required (Industry Designations strongly encouraged)
Experience
• 10+ Years of Individual Life Underwriting experience directly aligned to the specific responsibilities of this position. (Required)
• Experience underwriting COLI / BOLI and/or Business Insurance
• Evaluate trends in data or information – Strong Risk Assessment Skills
• Demonstrated strong negotiation skills
• Demonstrated strong relationship management skills with internal clients (e.g. senior management, peers and colleagues); proven ability to develop creative and collaborative approaches
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
