Job Description
The Credit Underwriting Team Leader is a key member of the Bank's Underwriting Division which underwrites all commercial loans and commercial real estate transactions for the business units.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Supervises a team of credit underwriters by managing the day-to-day operations, including the assignment of underwriting requests in the appropriate order of priority and the review of credit packages to ensure established work standards and time frames are met.
• Daily monitoring of workflows and work turn around times to ensure efficient processing of credit requests along with the measurement of underwriting productivity to ensure underwriting packages meet quality and production standards and conform to established policies and procedures.
• Supervises the development and performance management through training and issue resolution(ie objective setting, performance assessment and feedback.)
• Manages the development and performance of credit underwriters through training, issue resolution and performance management (i.e. objective setting, performance assessment and feedback).
• Ensures credit packages (prepared by the team) adequately enumerate key credit issues and can provide the approving officers with sufficient information to make an informed and prudent loan decision.
• Ensures loan structure is consistent with Loan Policy.
• Identifies credit policy exceptions and incorporates suitable mitigants into the credit package.
• Proactively communicates with Loan Officers during the underwriting process.
• Conducts and participates in customer meetings/conference calls.
Requirements
Required Skills:
• Strong knowledge of financial accounting.
• Advanced knowledge of commercial credit and strong credit quality skills including accounting, financial statement analysis, and cash flow analysis experience.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills: express ideas and convey technical information in writing and verbally.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and performing internet searches.
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment and move quickly through assignments to ensure deadlines are met.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups to manage internal and external customer relationships.
• Thorough understanding of risk and consequences of errors in formulating decisions and providing direction to others.
Required Experience:
• High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of 5 years' experience in underwriting commercial loan and/or commercial real estate transactions, or 3 years of VNB credit underwriting experience combined with the completion of formal credit training (VNB's Credit Underwriting Training Program or equivalent).
• Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 5 years' experience in underwriting commercial loan and/or commercial real estate transactions, or 3 years of VNB credit underwriting experience combined with the completion of formal credit training (VNB's Credit Underwriting Training Program or equivalent) preferred.
• Supervisory experience managing two or more people preferred.
