Senior Managing Director of Wealth Sustainability - Ascent
Ascent Private Capital Management of U.S. Bank exclusively serves ultra-high net worth (UHNW) clients with net worth in excess of $75MM. The Senior Managing Director, Wealth Sustainability Services (SMD, WS Services) operates as the strategic and tactical leader of Ascent’s Wealth Sustainability practices. This person is responsible for a critical discipline, and contributes to a dynamic team as part of a holistic wealth management/family office platform. The SMD, WS Services provides insight, direction, leadership and support for Wealth Sustainability, within Ascent and U.S. Bank as a whole.
This position shares responsibility for growing Ascent’s practice with other national teams and regional office colleagues, and is further responsible for building and maintaining the WS Services practice area. The SMD, WS Services reports to the President of Ascent and manages a team of professionals in Risk Management, Wealth Planning, CFO services, Family Governance and Legacy. The role works collaboratively with the Ascent Regional Office team members. The regional wealth strategists and the regional CFO services managing directors have a dotted line reporting to the SMD, WS. The person in this role often serves as a strategic partner collaborating with U.S. Bank’s Wealth Management partners and executives to create and drive a ‘One U.S. Bank’ vision.
A JD, Ph.D., MBA, Master of Accountancy or Taxation is required, as is proven experience leading high-performing teams within a professional service firm or in the financial services industry. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have prior experience with family governance and/or estate planning for UHNW individuals, trusts, closely-held businesses, and pass-through entities.
This candidate will be required to foster a culture of service, flexibility and excitement in supporting the front offices, often acting as an advocate for the team, and promoting available resources and services. He or she should be proficient at building partnerships and camaraderie, and willing to re-evaluate strategic processes to better align with expressed client needs. The ideal candidate would be an expert in the areas of wealth-transfer, succession planning and taxation, with a general knowledge of life insurance, family dynamics, rising generation priorities and other key factors in successful intergenerational wealth planning. Most of all, the successful candidate will bring the experience and leadership skills necessary to create a culture of trust and thrive as the leader of a diverse team of accomplished professionals.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Manage the overall Wealth Sustainability function through leadership, mentoring, modeling, defining vision, business operations and priorities.
• Provide thought leadership throughout the organization, serving as an advocate for Ascent and WS services.
• Identify and prioritize key deliverables for the WS team and set direction to support clients and regional offices.
• Innovate in tactical and strategic services to remain on the cutting edge of the UHNW space while dedicating appropriate resources to grow and support existing services.
• Regularly evaluate opportunities in the pipeline collaborating with strategists and regional offices to identify areas of need.
• Often required to participate in the prospecting process, including proposal writing, calculating fees, working with compliance and legal and speaking at conferences.
• Provide expertise and support to staff while working closely with the President of Ascent to create a new strategic vision that keeps Ascent ahead of the curve.
Qualifications:
• Ability to effectively manage a team of professionals with varying backgrounds and expertise while balancing the needs of clients, employees, and the organization.
• Broad strategic thinker, able to effectively promote and integrate internal and external resources and services using innovative approaches.
• Strong familiarity with all WS offerings with the ability to promote, set direction, and strategize across all disciplines.
• Minimum 15+ years’ experience working with family governance; family owned business; wealth management; tax, estate and business succession planning; or other relevant experience working with/for UHNW clients.
• Graduate degree required (JD, LL.M., Master of Accountancy or Taxation, Ph.D., MBA); other professional designations recommended (CPA, CFP, CFA, PCC, MCC, CFBA etc.).
• Proven track record as an inspiring leader combined with being a trusted advisor to UHNW individuals.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Strong emotional intelligence and highly-developed interpersonal skills necessary to work intimately with families and employees on highly sensitive, complex and confidential matters.
• Comfortable navigating corporate culture, compliance and legal requirements.
• Excellent communication, collaboration and motivational skills.
