The Head of BBVA Compass Design will lead Design Thinking change within the organization by influencing leadership, building processes which support strong design, and by developing a strong team. This person will bring the right designers and UX professionals together on specific projects and inspire them to do beautiful and innovative design work. They will be responsible for leading design on multiple projects, managing and developing designers, and feeding into the broader strategic direction of initiatives.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
• Evolve ‘Design Thinking’ from mid-adoption to everyday practice within BBVA Compass. Demonstrate the value to business partners in positive outcomes, and build internal Agile processes which support design success.
• Set the Design Team strategy – developing and refining how we engage and inspire the business, setting the overall creative direction, establishing the setup and workflow of the team etc.
◦ Develop and refine thought leadership perspectives.
◦ Ensuring this insight is disseminated through the design team and applied to projects.
• Intimately understand the consumer and their needs, as well as our products/services in order to build amazing experiences which hit business targets. Coach team members to do the same.
◦ Manage UX research & testing to ensure the best solutions are developed.
• Strategic alignment with business partners to shape a competitive product roadmap which addresses critical consumer needs with excellent experiences.
◦ In collaboration with product owners, the businesses, and engineering, create an innovative design vision for projects.
◦ Work with internal clients to establish clear requirements and creative briefs for projects, guiding them in a suitable and on-brand direction.
◦ Clearly explain design process to stakeholders, negotiating appropriate timelines.
• Lead and inspire a highly collaborative team with open communication and coaching, aimed at developing strong and engaged talent.
◦ Strive continuously to elevate the quality of the experiences, products and services that we design. Challenge the status-quo.
◦ Ensure the design team has the right skills and talent. Includes active talent spotting and working with recruiting partners.
◦ Promoting development through one to one mentoring and through bringing people together to share best-practices.
◦ Actively participate in the process and provide useful/detailed guidance to designers.
◦ Rigorously analyze business and customer needs alongside potential design options.
◦ Keep abreast of the latest: design approaches and methodologies, industry trends, social and economic influences, and technological advancements.
◦ Partner with Global Design executives to build consistencies in Design while ensuring execution works well with US consumers.
• Manage planning, operational and approval aspects of Design
◦ Manage multiple teams, consisting of direct and indirect reports. Teams may consist of permanent, contract, or 3rd party vendors.
◦ With the input of the designers, create detailed project plans outlining the key tasks, the people responsible for them and the order in which they will be completed.
◦ Monitor progress against plan, taking action to overcome issues that are faced.
◦ Sign-off on final outputs from designers.
◦ Provide regular updates of progress to senior stakeholders.
◦ Present final outputs to senior stakeholders, including C-suite executives, and respond to questions and/or challenges.
Qualifications
Skills and Experience
• 10+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in a Design discipline such as product, industrial, service, interaction, digital or visual design or sufficient work experience.
• Experience directing multiple, complicated commercial design projects at a leading agency or within internal design function at a major brand involving senior stakeholders and interdisciplinary creative teams.
• Worked with major brands, large budgets and experience aligning to brand guidelines.
• Experience of acting in team leadership roles, including planning and resourcing for projects, senior stakeholder management (including ability to get buy-in on UI/UX direction) and status tracking and reporting.
• Stakeholder management skills – able to build strong relationships, communicate effectively and, when necessary, challenge constructively. This should include the ability to steer an initial project proposition to ensure the design direction is the best one for the needs of the customer and the business and to explain in detail the approach and rationale behind a design.
• Deep experience doing ‘hands-on’ user interface design working on multiple, large scale projects across a wide range of platforms and devices – for example, desktop applications, mobile apps (iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry), desktop web and responsive web. The ideal candidate will have a broad spread of abilities across user interviews, persona development, storyboarding, wire-framing, visual designs, prototyping, and usability testing.
• Broad understanding of the whole process of developing digital solutions – knowledge of and passion for Interaction design, Service design, front-end development.
• Familiar with designing product, services and experiences across multiple user touch points.
• Ability to think analytically, leverage data and research to support design, and synthesize information from multiple sources to make clear and informed decisions.
• Highly creative with the ability to generate ideas and practically contribute to design details.
• Ability to communicate ideas through drawing, digital tools, prototyping, model making etc.
• Project management – able to plan and coordinate different work streams to deliver work on time and on budget.
• Problem-solving skills – able to work tirelessly and think creatively in order to find solutions to problems/issues (relating to design choices, team set up, prioritization of projects etc.).
• Strong proficiency with relevant design software/tools – Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch.
• Awareness of new and emerging design trends and patterns.
• 8+ years’ experience working with relevant design software such Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator or sufficient work experience.
• 8+ years’ experience working with responsive web and mobile applications.
• 3-5 years’ experience designing for Agile projects.
• At least 1 year of experience using Design Thinking techniques professionally and the ability to run workshops.
• Experience working in multicultural environments, fluency in Spanish is a plus.
• Experience working within the financial sector is a plus.

Customer & Landscape Awareness: Awareness of the technology landscape, the overall capabilities of various platforms and multi-platform design. Keen interest in keeping abreast of what’s happening elsewhere in the Financial sector, and bringing in new ideas wherever relevant.
Travel: This position requires travel (approximately 25%) between Houston, Dallas, Birmingham and occasionally Madrid Spain and will be required to stay in communication with our teams and customers across the US and in other regions.
