The Manager will be responsible for overseeing the operations and serving as the subject matter expert of The Commerce Trust Company’s Real Estate and Special Assets Group on a system-wide basis. Employees within the Departments are responsible for administering and managing: closely held business interests; agricultural, commercial, and residential real estate; secured and unsecured notes and mortgages; Oil, Gas & Mineral Interests and other investments in non-publicly traded partnerships, joint ventures, and private companies. These investments are held in accounts with varying capacity to include; custodian, investment manager and fiduciary, and thus the level of responsibility and required compliance with certain regulations varies as well. The Manager will provide expertise in evaluating new business opportunities with respect to these assets and coordinating pre-acceptance due diligence and making recommendations on acceptance.
A key responsibility of the Manager will be to ensure Department compliance with policies and procedures and is expected to be engaged with periodic exams with regulatory authorities and internal audit. In addition, the Manager will be responsible for overseeing the completion of business valuation engagements as necessary for gift/estate tax purposes, tax planning and transactions and other consulting services where Commerce is hired on a contractual basis to provide such services. The Manager is also responsible for coaching, training, and helping employees of the Departments reach their goals.
The Manager will also have an assigned book of business, consisting primarily of key client relationships that have significant holdings in terms of value/complexity/ownership Real Estate and Special Asset type investments. The position also includes oversight of and contractual negotiation with service providers whom provide third party property management and outsource services to Commerce. The Manager will also serve as the Chairman of the Special Assets Committee, which has oversight responsibility for periodic reviews and actions related to investments managed by the Departments.
Experience/Education
•Ten or more years’ experience in Trust, Wealth Management or consulting in a fast-paced environment with a focus on accuracy, service and accountability to deliver results, both individually and with a team.
•Proven ability to lead employees, preferably in a multi-market environment
•Strong leadership and coaching skills with proven ability to develop and lead strategic initiatives and implement organizational objectives
•Long-term focus on development of high performing team and ability to take an innovative approach to support improvement and solutions to core team and company goals
•Collaborate proactively with internal partners to identify and service unique client and team needs
•Results oriented and self-motivated.
•Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree is preferred
•Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
•Advanced knowledge of business terms, trust and investment relationships and ability to interpret and summarize provisions of complex legal trust, real estate and corporate business documents.
•Broad knowledge of fiduciary responsibilities as they relate to the management of closely held businesses and real estate held in trust/investment management accounts.
•Advanced knowledge of trust services including administration, tax and investments and capacity to identify problems and recommend solutions in an advice based context.
•Advanced knowledge of trust/estate planning as it relates to the closely held business owner and real estate.
•Advanced knowledge of the investment field, securities valuation and real estate management gained through participation in the CFA, ASA, CFP, CTFA, CCIM, CPM or other specialized program desired.
