Job Description
The Credit Underwriter I analyzes and underwrites loan facilities for the Commercial Loan and Commercial Real Estate departments. The underwriting focus is on loan requests up to $10 million primarily new loans to existing customers or renewals and modifications of existing loan facilities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Prepare a full credit package for loan requests up to $10 million primarily new loans to existing customers or renewals and modifications of existing loan facilities.
• Complete credit packages within required timeframes with minimal edits required.
• Demonstrate an understanding of loan policy, underwriting standards and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct a credit analysis identifying key credit issues and providing mitigation of same.
• Spread business financial statements using the Baker Hill/One Point system.
• Analyze a company's operating performance and financial condition to understand business trends and to identify credit risks.
• Conduct cash flow analysis (business, personal and global) to evaluate the borrower's loan repayment ability.
• Spread and analyzes personal financial statements to evaluate personal liquidity, personal debt levels and contingencies.
• Assess the bank's collateral coverage by reviewing of accounts receivable, accounts payable and inventory aging reports.
• Perform industry/market analysis to identify industry trends and risks.
• Prepare loan offering and related forms for the credit package.
• Identify policy exceptions and incorporates suitable mitigants into the credit package.
• Proactively communicate with Loan Officers and a Senior Credit Underwriter during the underwriting process.
• Participate in client meetings/conference calls together with a Senior Credit Underwriter.
Requirements
Required Skills:
• Knowledge of commercial credit and fine credit quality skills including accounting, financial statement analysis and cash flow analysis experience.
• Strong analytical abilities and problem solving skills.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills: express ideas and convey technical information in writing and verbally.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and performing internet searches.
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment and move quickly through assignments to ensure deadlines are met.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups to manage internal and external customer relationships.
• Thorough understanding of risk and consequences of errors in formulating decisions and providing direction to others.
Required Experience:
• High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of one year of experience in underwriting commercial loan and/or commercial real estate transactions, or six months of VNB credit underwriting experience following successful completion of VNB's Credit Underwriting Training Program.
• Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 1 year of experience in underwriting commercial loan and/or commercial real estate transactions, or six months of VNB credit underwriting experience following successful completion of VNB's Credit Underwriting Training Program preferred.
