Role/Responsibilities
We’re seeking a highly self-motivated, technology-savvy teammate who thrives working in a collaborative, data-driven environment. This position will help design and build world-class, intuitive, and comprehensive taxonomies and ontologies to optimize content discovery and classification.
As a Taxonomist, you will have the opportunity to support the Taxonomy strategies for Moodys.com which impact navigation, recommendations, and on-site search to create an optimal user experience for our customers. Taxonomists create and maintain the categorization of content, inform Product decisions, and support Developers. They identify the best ways to gather and categorize content. They also troubleshoot website categorization issues, tool and system issues.
Essential Job Functions
1. Maintain and optimize taxonomies, metadata and classification schema to ensure alignment and efficiency between upstream and downstream taxonomies
2. Partner with Content and Technology teams across MA and MIS on metadata and taxonomy solutions. Provide metadata support for Product Initiatives and enhancements.
3. Contribute to Strategy and Innovation: Serve as a taxonomy, metadata, and ontology subject matter expert that contributes expertise to define and implement new business opportunities to keep Moody’s up-to-date with market best practices.
4. Serve as a Taxonomist Strategist to enhance the categorization of existing and new content for better display, search, access and distribution.
5. Assist with taxonomy and categorization build-out efforts, including development, deployment, and maintenance to improve product findability and user experience for Moody’s Analytics customers
6. Interact with internal stakeholders, including product managers and research specialists, to ensure that the taxonomies being built meet end-user needs
7. Become a power user of our internally-developed tools to accelerate the development of our structured data efforts
8. Serve as a taxonomy and tagging expert to represent and respond to the research and product teams, improving internal taxonomical structures as well as the processes used to build and maintain our taxonomies
9. Identifies opportunities to make enhancements to the taxonomy, metadata and content model
10. Develops proficiency in content management system
11. Shares knowledge, ground rules and perspective with team members
Qualifications
Education:
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, Linguistics, or equivalent professional experience
BS degree in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) or equivalent experience with language-oriented, technical/scientific discipline
Proficient in MS Excel, coupled with strong technical aptitude. Familiarity with relational databases, XML/XSLT and structured query languages a plus
Experience:
5-7 years of experience developing and managing controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, metadata and classification schema, online search technology, insights research or related field ideally for a client-facing application
Highly organized, detail-oriented, structured thinker
A solid understanding of metadata, subject classification, and content organization
Experience creating, implementing, and maintaining taxonomies and its relationship to search
Proven skills in data retrieval techniques such as SQL and or Boolean query construction
Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
Ability to balance business requirements with end-user needs in the development and growth of system taxonomies
