Zurich North America is currently looking for a Technical Director, Auto. We prefer this position is based in our North American Headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois but we will consider other locations. This position reports to the Executive Technical Director of Casualty.
This Technical Director is responsible for leading the auto portfolio across NACI and Alternative Markets spanning 14 different business segments. This role supports the businesses as they provide solutions to customers while addressing systemic auto industry profitability challenges. This position Overseas product development, develops underwriting actions, manages and updates rating and pricing tools, supports delivers state of the line. Portfolio management across Product Design , Underwriting (Execution of Empowerment, Risk Selection and Deal Structure), Pricing, and Accumulation Management.
This role works closely with the leaders in the business units, effectively acting as a trusted partner and advisor in setting strategy, delivering portfolio performance analysis, identifying actions and providing underwriting tools to ensure successful execution of financial expectations for the entire portfolio. This role will also work on strategic initiatives and key pipeline projects.
Key Responsibilities Include:
• Ensures consistent and enhanced underwriting across the Commercial Auto LoB and drives portfolio management to improve underwriting performance.
• Describes, encourages and enforces a rigorous underwriting process and procedure monitoring system.
• Delivers Commercial Auto LoB plan; provides expert support to both Underwriting and Technical Underwriting.
• Sets and delivers Underwriting Key Performance Indicators including Actual Premium/ Technical Price (AP/TP) metrics.
• Addresses emerging issues and identifies opportunities for growth or change.
• Establishes exposure identification, risk assessment, risk response, control activities and monitoring of the Commercial Auto LoB.
• Ensures effective leadership and management of Underwriting people resources: pursuing active talent management, driving capability development and creating a high performance culture.
• Monitors framework for underwriting decisions e.g. authority grants, referrals, technical underwriting reviews.
• Responsible for design and implementation of rating and pricing tools and methodologies.
• Provides underwriting insight for underwriting tools.
• Develops, promotes and maintains strategic partnerships both internally and externally.
• Leads and manages the Commercial Auto LoB underwriting strategy for product development in close collaboration with Proposition Development.
• Identify technical training and develops relational a training framework.
• Oversees underwriting engagement with industry and regulatory bodies.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree
• 12+ years of Underwriting or Operations experience
• Experience operating in different business cultures
• Supervisory or management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced knowledge and practice of Commercial Auto Lines of business
• Broad knowledge base required of Product, Underwriting, Pricing, Accumulation Management, Reinsurance, Project Management and various models that distribute product
• Demonstrated technical knowledge and multi-level leadership skills reflective of a practitioner who has been operating at a senior underwriting level or manager role
• Track record of fostering business improvement and delivering change in a complex insurance environment
• Strong collaboration and communication skills
• Excellent customer relationship experience
• Strong relationship, presentation skills, negotiation and leadership skills
• Ability to manage complex portfolios
