New York Life Real Estate Investors (NYLREI) is the real estate investment arm of one of the nation’s largest mutual life insurance companies. NYLREI manages over $50 billion in client assets, including commercial mortgages, commercial mortgage backed securities (CMBS), direct equity real estate ownership and other real estate related investments on behalf of both third party institutional investors and New York Life.
NYLREI has an immediate opening for a Director in our CMBS and real estate capital markets group.
The position will entail the following responsibilities:
• Analysis and Management of CMBS. The role will involve researching, analyzing and recommending investments in a variety of CMBS products in a team environment. In most years between $1.5 billion and $3.5 billion of CMBS and CRE CDOs will be purchased and occasionally assets will be sold. We are active participants in the primary and secondary markets, investing in securities ranging from widely distributed offerings to individually crafted, private transactions. The role involves due diligence, independent research, structuring and modeling plus close interaction with other NYL REI team members. Additional responsibilities include the close monitoring of CMBS industry trends and the sharing of observations internally and with clients. We encourage the maintenance and expansion of relationships within the CMBS industry, with internal constituents and with our clients.
• Investment Reporting and Surveillance. Conduct portfolio surveillance and coordinate investment reporting to internal and external constituents. Coordinate with team members to address credit concerns and assist with quarterly surveillance reporting.
• Growing the NYL REI CMBS Platform. The role will support the marketing and research initiatives within NYLREI’s growing external asset management platform. Participate in creating new initiatives and enhancing existing mandates.
The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of real estate credit fundamentals gained from several years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Underwriting or directly analyzing debt or equity real estate transactions. Relevant experience may include roles originating debt or equity investments or in a credit risk capacity. CRE credit training is a plus.
• Originating, analyzing or managing CMBS or other structured real estate investments in a sell side or buy side role.
• Experience as a ratings analyst or other credit analyst roles.
The role requires proficiency with the MS Office suite of programs and leading real estate analytics vendors as well as strong verbal and written communications skills and a proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a demanding investment environment.
