Job Summary
• Directs and controls all phases of the Commercial Underwriting Team;
• Responsible for the growth and profitability of an assigned book of business or territory;
• Evaluates and manages commercial risk acceptance, improvement, rejection or modification to support designated territorial or industry goals;
• Identifies areas of profitable commercial growth, retention and market penetration;
• Ensures exceptional Customer Service is provided to our agents and policyholders;
• Assumes the duties of the Underwriting Director when called upon and provides back up for other Service Team Managers when they are not available.
Essential Job Functions
• Manages the risk selection process by providing leadership and direction to the underwriting staff that encourages independent and creative thinking; develops decision making/negotiation skills and promotes flexibility in handling complex transactions that require exception processing.
• Reviews and exercises approval of risks within their designated authority level, and refers risks above authority level to the Underwriting Director, Commercial Center Manager and/or Home Office personnel with recommendations for approval, pricing and coverage to be provided.
• Manages the quantity and quality of work performed within the Service Team to ensure business unit processing standards and performance objectives are met; focuses on accurate, timely and service-oriented underwriting for proposals, new business, endorsements and renewals.
• Promotes professional working relations between other service teams, departments, home office and the agency force.
• Maintains superior customer experience and promotes business growth by meeting with individual agents; builds relationships with various agency segments along with developing agency-specific plans to increase their underwriting expertise with the goal of increasing profitable commercial production; participates in commercial sales clinics and commercial career schools.
• Monitors large losses, loss trends, and other financial reports that are reflective of performance in relation to goals; develops strategies to correct any deterioration in Combined Ratio figures.
• Creates strategies to optimize efficient utilization of resources by managing operating costs and understanding the economic impact of decisions made; reviews work processes and procedures in order to implement efficiencies.
• Formulates and approves responses to customer and agency complaints to assure their resolution and to prevent similar complaints in the future.
• Identifies and forwards computer system problems to the appropriate department for resolution.
• Conducts performance reviews, including quarterly audits; establishes underwriting authority levels coupled with related work profiles; takes leadership role in staff development efforts by coaching, mentoring, and appraisal of job results; influences the corporate culture by recruiting and hiring results-driven individuals.
• Other duties as assigned.
Physical Actions
Required job duties include sedentary work as well as some or all of the following physical activities; lifting and/or carrying 40-lbs (suitcases, projectors, handouts, laptop computer, etc.), seeing, speaking, hearing, and occasional operation of a motor vehicle.
Physical Environment
Required job duties are normally performed in a climate controlled office environment, with occasional job duties performed in company car, airplane, hotels and various physical sites dictated by travel that are not always in a climate controlled environment.
Education Requirements
Four year college degree required (preferably in a business-related field of study), insurance industry designation achieved, or Completion of three sections from CPCU courses 500/510, 520 or 551, 552 Or as otherwise negotiated
Experience Requirements
• Five or more years commercial multi-line underwriting experience.
• Prior supervisory experience a plus.
• Consideration will be given to relevant equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Skill Requirement
• Knowledge of management information and business systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
• Must be detail oriented and accurate; demonstrate organizational skills and flexibility; ability to perform general mathematical calculations; ability to work in a fast paced environment be team oriented and have a consistent commitment to excellence.
• Analytical thinking skills to make timely, appropriate decisions and recommendations after reviewing all relevant information.
• Technical expertise in commercial risk selection and pricing.
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated presentation skills.
• Ability to successfully interact with the agency force to grow business while at the same time maintaining underwriting discipline.
• Ability to read and interpret policy contract language.
• Working broad-based knowledge of relevant insurance laws and statutes; the contract issue process, computer systems, competitors’ products and marketing practices.
