Summary:
This position manages the preparation and review of tax returns, payments, and financial statement estimates and accruals. Manages audit defense and assists with writing appeals for issues with a moderate to high level of complexity and materiality. Completes research, planning, and consulting with a high level of complexity and materiality. Leads projects, makes presentations, and assists with the training and development of less experienced staff.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills Requirements
• Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support or service
• Basic knowledge and understanding of GAAP, Statutory or pension accounting, taxes, or employee benefits.
• Demonstrated experience in developing financial models or databases.
• Demonstrated experience utilizing concepts related to accounting, accounting systems, budget, or tax.
• Solid knowledge and understanding of accounting, accounting systems, budget, or tax concepts.

Primary Accountabilities
Tax Returns & Payments (30%)
• Computes consolidated quarterly federal income tax payments including intercompany tax allocations, and large periodic state income tax payments.
• Manages the preparation and review of AFLIC and /or AFMIC separate company income tax returns, and the consolidated federal income tax return, various federal benefits returns and premium tax, and sales and use tax returns.
Financial Statement Estimates & Accruals (30%)
• Prepares quarterly federal and state income tax entries for AFLIC and /or AFMIC.
• Prepares tax footnotes, tax summaries for management, and responds to questions regarding highly complex or material tax items.
• Manages the various benefits accounting, funding, and assumption activities and the preparation and review of audited year-end financial statements for the Pension and 401K Plans.
• Calculates the estimated AFLIC and /or AFMIC federal and state audit liabilities. Reviews subsidiary estimated federal and state audit liabilities.
• Reviews quarterly premium tax entries.
Research, Planning & Consulting (20%)
• Researches highly complex and material issues or developments as assigned by the Tax Manager.
• Analyzes complex legislative or regulatory changes in order to: identify the potential impact on the company; evaluate alternatives; recommend strategies and/or actions; and communicate with interested parties.
• Answers complex tax or compensation and benefits questions for various business partners.
• Consults with various business partners to identify and address complex tax and/or compensation and benefits issues related to organizational changes, strategies, and business plans. Assists with corporate, divisional, or departmental studies and projects.
• Performs various investment-related analysis and modeling as assigned by the Tax Manager.
Audit Defense (15%)
• Manages the state and local income, premium, and sales / use tax audits
• Researches issues, coordinates information gathering, responds to information requests and develops high quality first-line arguments.
• Makes recommendations to management about whether proposed adjustments should be contested or accepted.
• Assists with writing the company`s arguments for appealing proposed adjustments of a moderate to high level of complexity and materiality.
• Assists an experienced tax accountant in the defense of federal income tax audit issues in areas of high level of complexity and materiality.
Staff Development & Process Improvement (5%)
• Trains staff and reviews their work product. Provides appropriate feedback to staff and updates to management as needed.
• Identifies procedure or workflow issues for further action and/or potential process improvements.
