Overview
The primary objective of this position is to drive material and visible improvement in the US Corporate Banking Department’s ("USCB") ability to execute deals and manage the existing portfolio. The role is a hybrid of both client-facing responsibilities along with client Relationship Managers (RMs) in the Marketing Groups, and leading the internal execution and risk management process supported by Lending Management Group members.
This position is responsible for leading underwriting and execution work directly with the head of marketing and client RMs. Primary responsibilities include and are not limited to leading and manageing the Lending Management Group, which is in charge of transaction structuring, transaction execution, documentation negotiation, and ongoing credit monitoring and portfolio management.
This person also will provide leadership management necessary to ensure that USCB has proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to efficiently grow the organization and to ensure financial strength and operating efficiency.
Responsibilities
(1) Transaction Structuring/Execution:
• Early-stage work with RMs on parameters for transaction pitches
• Negotiation of transaction engagement and term sheet, in collaboration with RMs
• Oversight and preparation of credit applications, capital allocation memos and customer on-boarding, in conjunction with LMG, the credit department, the risk management department and compliance.
(2) Documentation:
• Negotiation and review of credit and other transaction documentation, in conjunction with internal legal and other back office functions
(3) Credit Monitoring/Portfolio Management:
• Oversight and management of ongoing credit monitoring per internal policy
• Processing of transaction-related requests, such as amendments and waivers to existing credit documentation
• Ongoing portfolio reporting, portfolio management, and credit cost oversight
(4)Oversight Internal Control:
• Oversees all aspects of the control environment including issues management, audits/reviews, Annual Risk Assessment, testing of controls and customer remediation.
• Ensures compliance in a complex regulatory environment through effective operational controls and incorporating updates to regulatory controls into day-to-day operational processes.
Qualifications
• A minimum of 10 years experience of institutional knowledge and products and broad knowledge of corporate banking.
• A Bachelor’s degree with academic distinction and coursework in economics, financial accounting, and corporate finance or its equivalent.
• Additional degrees and/or certifications such as CFA or MBA a plus
• Good understanding of the USCB business and broad knowledge of SMBC and its bank products.
• Solid knowledge of corporate finance/fixed income markets.
• Proficiency in understanding legal documentation, ability to construct and negotiate term sheets.
• Ability to garner support and secure buy in across a wide range of stakeholders; ability to create a strong network of relationships among peers, internal partners, external constituencies and decision makers to deliver end products.
• Skilled in organizational development, personnel management, budget and resource development, and strategic planning.
• Strong understanding of corporate credit risk and ensures compliance in a complex regulatory environment through effective operational controls and incorporating updates to regulatory controls into day-to-day operational processes.
• Deep understanding of policies, procedures, compliance and approval process at the Bank, necessary to aid execution.
• Deep institutional knowledge required for influential network and knowledge of policies and procedures in order to ensure successful implementation of business strategy and goals.
