General Directive: Responsible for managing employee and contractor health and safety (H&S) programs, across Hancock Forest Management (HFM) North-Inland and Northwest Divisions. Responsibilities encompass a broad range of H&S support to forest operations including HFM employees and forestry contractors. The two divisions currently include all of Hancock Timber Resource Group’s (HTRG) timberland investments within the western United States.
Scope:HFMNW manages more than 1.35 million acres across the Northwestern United States providing HTRG clients with superior forest management services. Creative solutions are required to ensure that health and safety management systems are up to date and implemented to reduce risk and maximize employee and forest contractor health and safety performance.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Ensure client fiduciary obligations are maintained without compromising H&S goals.
• Service the continuous information and communication needs of multiple teams based in multiple regions related to H&S.
• Actively engage HFM employees and contractors to improve H&S systems and safety performance.
• Maintain and revise H&S policies, procedure, guidelines and manuals.
• Provide health and safety leadership to forest operations to foster ground level implementation of safety protection of HFM employees and contractors.
• Implement internal H&S employee and contractor compliance audits.
• Develop and maintain an H&S leading indicator program and reporting dashboard.
• Evaluate, design and maintain a simplistic and cost effective H&S data management system.
• Conduct H&S incident investigations and improve safety systems and protections based on findings.
• Provide H&S technical and cultural support to division level employee and contractor H&S committees.
• Develop H&S cultural programs and provide leadership to influence and improve the H&S culture of employees and contractors.
• Monitor, review and manage H&S drug and alcohol program effectiveness and efficiency.
• Provide H&S Training to employees and contractors.
• Conduct H&S research and analysis to improve safety systems and performance.
• Ensure compliance with Federal and state H&S regulations.
Skills Required:
• Good written and verbal communication.
• Excellent computer and analytical skills.
• High level organizational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.
• Excellent working Knowledge of health and safety systems.
• Ability to provide H&S advice/consultancy to forestry staff and contractors.
• Ability to train employees and contractors in the H&S systems, principles and culture.
• Good knowledge of OSHA regulations.
• Knowledgeable and the ability to install a positive safety culture through change management strategies.
• Ability and desire to learn forestry operations and apply H&S principles, techniques and practices
Requirements:
• A bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene or related discipline; or a forestry bachelor’s degree with safety certifications and extensive H&S experience is required.
• A graduate degree in occupational health, industrial hygiene or related discipline is highly desirable.
• Minimum of 3-5 years occupational health and safety experience is required.
• Forest management experience is desirable.
• Must be team player and self-motivated.
• Must have excellent relationship, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong computer, and analytical skills are desired.
• Willingness to travel up to 40% of the time
