Hancock Timber Resource Group
was founded in 1985 by foresters and investment professionals who believed that timberland provided investors with an attractive asset class to further diversify their portfolios. Our clients have assets located in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, New Zealand and the United States. As of June 30, 2017, assets under management totaled $10.8 billion.
This position will report to HFM’s Charlotte, North Carolina office.
General Directive: Responsible for managing silviculture programs within the Hancock Forest Management North America (HFM NA). HFM NA currently includes all of Hancock Timber Resource Group’s (HTRG) timberland investments within the United States and Canada.
Scope:HFM NA manages approximately 3.6 million acres in 18 separate states providing HTRG clients with superior forest management services. Creative solutions are required to ensure intensive silvicultural advancements are implemented, modeled within the Growth & Yield systems, reflected in appraisals, while providing foresters tools to analyze the financial impacts of silvicultural treatments.
Specific Duties
• Meet client fiduciary obligations.
• Service the continuous information and communication needs of multiple teams based in multiple regions of the US.
• In conjunction with the Biometrics Planner, perform benefit analysis and implement, as appropriate, the latest forest management technologies and tools.
• Coordinate and perform training functions related to HTRG/HFM policies, procedures and continuing education needs for division personnel.
• Assume lead role with divisional involvement in NCSTIC, NCSFNC and other research cooperatives where appropriate and needed.
• Provide lead role for HTRG and HFM’s genetic programs in all Divisions across the US including but not limited to the Bon Air Orchard, breeding, and testing.
• Provide support to operational personnel in areas related to harvesting, planning, reforestation, and silviculture.
• Provide assistance in policy development and implementation. Insure compliance with Hancock, Hancock Natural Resource Group, and Hancock Forest Management (HFM) policies and procedures. Insure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws.
• Coordinate division level RFP efforts.
• Participate in appropriate industry associations and committees.
• Other responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time.
Skill Sets Required
• Proficient knowledge of tree improvement.
• Good communicator.
• Proficient in southern pine silviculture and management, including associated management cost and return expectations, discounted cash flow analysis, harvest administration, and timber marketing.
• Familiarity with timberland accounting, inventory/GIS systems land records, and general forestry operations.
• Knowledgeable in silvicultural prescriptions and soils.
• Proficient in knowledge and experience associated with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
• Knowledgeable in safety related management.
Requirements:
• A bachelor’s degree in Forestry, or equivalent experience is required
• Graduate degree in forestry related discipline or business is highly desirable
• Minimum of fifteen years forest management, environmental management, tree improvement, and forest operations experience.
• Must be team player and self motivated
• Must have excellent relationship, interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong computer and analytical skills are desired
• Client service oriented
