Department Profile
The cornerstone of Morgan Stanley’s risk management philosophy is the execution of risk-adjusted returns through prudent risk-taking that protects Morgan Stanley’s capital base and franchise. Risk Management protects the firm from exposure to losses resulting from defaults by our lending and trading counterparties.
Background on the Position
The role will reside within Firm Risk Management’s (FRM) COO function, which covers a broad array of areas including financial and resource management, regulatory relationship management, project management of key regulatory initiatives, governance and policies and procedures.
The Central Regulatory Function team oversees the development of FRM policies and procedures and governance framework globally. This includes for tracking and reporting progress of regulatory deliverables, managing regulatory exams and internal audits as well as rule change management, self-assessments and quality assurance.
Its key functions are to manage regulatory risk, establish FRM policy and governance standards and to spearhead remediation projects related to regulatory and audit findings. The group works in close collaboration with subject matter experts across all areas in FRM, as well as other departments within the Firm.
The ideal candidate will have experience in risk management, regulatory risk, and familiarity with Fed, OCC and SEC regulations. This position offers opportunities to gain exposure to all aspects of FRM and to senior risk managers.
Primary Responsibilities
• Support the senior Regulatory Risk Function team, including by initiating and execute projects related to regulatory risk
• Represent the RRF in senior discussions and forums, including by managing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders across FRM
• Support the build-out of enhance regulatory risk management processes across a broad range of risk types and stripes
• Provide effective challenge and review to FRM responses and remediation plans to regulatory exams and findings
Qualifications
Skills required (essential)
• Minimum 5 years of experience in consulting, legal or complex financial institution
• Experience of risk management, preferably including regulatory risk
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Detail oriented with exceptional organizational skills.
• Superior analytical thinking and problem solving abilities
• Proven leadership ability with strong relationship building and client management skills
• Ability to work effectively on multiple projects under tight deadlines
• Intellectual curiosity with a focus on information sharing
• Knowledge of financial services industry regulatory guidance
• Experience interacting with large bank/securities regulators (e.g. FRB, OCC, SEC, PRA, FINRA, CFTC) is a plus
• Proficiency in MS Office and related applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
• Minimum Educational Requirement: Bachelor’s Degree
