The Vice President, US Power, Utilities & Infrastructure (“PU&I”), Investment & Corporate Banking, is a key player on and across investment banking deal teams, collaborating and generating solutions for current and prospective corporate clients, private equity firms and infrastructure / pension funds.
The Vice President is responsible for planning, organizing, developing and delivering client presentations, managing and developing analysts and associates, liaising with and building client relationships, and leading the execution of M&A and capital raising transactions. While the Vice President will primarily be responsible supporting senior managing directors, the Vice President will also have an increasing opportunity to take on client coverage responsibilities of his/her own. This role is based in New York City.
BMO Capital Markets’ US PU&I, Investment & Corporate Banking Group is a newly-formed team lead by senior managing directors who are joining BMO Capital Markets from a top 5 Power & Utilities team with significant sector experience across corporate sell-side and buy-side transactions, asset sales and acquisitions, bridge loans, equity and equity-linked financings, high yield and other debt capital markets transactions. In addition to US business development, the Group’s mandate includes cross-border M&A activity with Canada, Europe, and Asia. The senior leadership of the Group has a strong track record of, and on-going commitment to, junior staff retention, internal promotion, and operating a flat organizational structure with open access and communication across the entire team to enhance learning and contribution from all team members.
As a critical addition to the newly formed team, the Vice President will also be called upon to help manage junior team members, implement internal training and procedures, and participate in recruiting efforts as the team expands.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Business Developmentand Client Relationship Management
• Collaborate with sector coverage and product partners to cover clients and prospects and to identify / deliver creative, timely financial and advisory solutions.
• Actively manage business development and transaction execution activities with PU&I clients.
• Operate as key member of the client coverage team in an effort to deepen client relationships, maximize sector penetration and generate revenue.
• Maintain awareness of all firm products and services offered.
• Participate in business development activities, including conferences and industry networking events.
• As part of the client coverage team, take responsibility for developing and building client relationships with client management teams and potentially Board members.
• Over time, take on primary client coverage responsibilities for corporate clients, likely with junior / intermediate scale companies initially as coverage skillset grows.
Management of Team and Team Workflow
• Lead deal teams by effectively managing work flow of analysts and associates in support of client objectives.
• Prepare / oversee delivery of creative and timely “pitches”.
• Seek opportunities for ongoing mentoring, coaching, and career development of analysts and associates.
• Actively participate in lateral internal or external hiring opportunities.
• Participate in building out the Group’s sector specific tools and materials, and coordinating with third party vendors providing consulting and data services, specific to the PU&I sector.
Qualifications
Knowledge:
• An undergraduate degree with academic coursework in finance, business, economics, or accounting and an outstanding academic achievement.
• MBA or equivalent experience as an analyst in investment banking.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in investment banking, with a strong preference for dedicated focus in Power, Utilities and Infrastructure, with exposure to regulated and non-regulated market segments. Experience with thermal and renewable generation is a plus.
• Credit analysis experience / understanding.
Skills:
• Exceptional skills in quantitative analytics, financial modeling and credit analysis.
• Capabilities in building complex models and reviewing work of others, with experience across M&A, project finance, and corporate finance.
• Deep understanding of equity capital markets, debt capital markets, and mergers & acquisitions.
• Developed knowledge of the power & utilities industry.
• Highly developed written and oral communication skills including the ability to create and deliver professional product ideas and presentations.
• Strong interpersonal skills used within a team environment and in client interaction with emphasis on excelling in relationship building.
• Ability to work under limited supervision.
• Excellent capability to independently and proactively service multiple clients and effectively manage multiple priorities.
• Proven abilities in managerial and leadership skills.
• Ability to learn and adapt quickly.
• Expertise in financial computer applications (e.g. Bloomberg, Factset, CapIQ, SNL, etc.) and MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
