Operations is one of the largest divisions in the firm and has diverse responsibilities, including correctly settling and recording millions of transactions per day, identifying and mitigating all operational risks, developing strong client relationships and partnering with technology to realize the full potential of IT and e-solutions. Throughout, the Operations department continually seeks ways to improve while actively supporting the development of new businesses, structures and markets.
This position will work specifically with the Alternative Investment Services (AIS) Operations team in support of the Alternative Investment Partners (AIP) Investment Team. The AIP Team is a group responsible for the investment management and support of Morgan Stanleys alternative investments fund of funds strategy. The AIP Team currently manages 200+ investment vehicles that utilize a variety of alternative investment strategies and vehicle structures. Total net assets under management exceed $30 billion. The AIS Operations team consists of nearly 60 team members that handle a variety of alternative investment operations activities, including trade/transaction processing, settlement, and pricing, investment team and client support and reporting, net asset value and financial statement oversight, and product launch supporting hedge fund, private equity, and multi-asset portfolio solutions investment teams within AIP. The individual in this position will be responsible for business analyst and management/coordination activities for the AIS Operations team, with focus on process improvement, project management, and technology coordination.
Responsibilities will require the candidate to build detailed knowledge of alternative investments (hedge funds, private equity funds, real estate funds), the AIP portfolios that hold them, as well as the AIS Operations system/process infrastructure and operating model that support the alternative investment business. This position will also involve developing and maintaining relationships with various internal Operations and investment team stakeholders and third party service providers. This position will be located in the West Conshohocken, PA office.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide leadership and drive execution over AIS Operations project portfolio which include but limited to process redesign, technology development, documentation and data enrichment, upstream/downstream handoff enhancement, and report building, among other scenarios.
• Drive thought leadership and support the design of future state strategic operating model for AIS Operations including with focus on innovation, process, technology & third party relationships through assessment of current state and business process redesign opportunities.
• Provide oversight and active management over Technology project development & implementation program for all longer-term technology projects and system turnovers across the AIS Operations team.
• Design, enhance & monitor regular business-wide operational metrics and management reporting tools.
• Execute functional process reviews/deep dives within operational areas to assess soundness of current state processes as well as identify both tactical and strategic opportunities for improvement; this will include strategic solutioning through identification of change programs as well as tactical plans for remediation.
• Partner with MSIM Ops Risk & Control team to perform thematic reviews of current or past risk incidents for linkage of consistent root cause themes as well as propose appropriate holistic remediation across functions drawing on common themes. Appropriate linkage to technology agenda and/or business process enhancements where appropriate.
• Enhance operational procedures & related documentation inclusive in partnership with AIS operations teams. This includes but is not limited to desktop & supervisory procedures and business requirements documents.
• Partner with MSIM Operations Risk & Control team in the assessment of cross-operations and Firm related policies to assess impact AIS Operations by AIS Operations.
• Possess, maintain and apply industry knowledge to tactical and strategic business enhancement solutions.
Qualifications
Skills Required
• Bachelors degree, or equivalent, in Accounting, Finance, or related business field.
• A minimum of eight years of experience in operations process/function management with demonstrated history of process analysis, strategic thinking, and enhancement deliveries is required.
• Prior experience in private equity and/or hedge funds is a plus.
• Demonstrate strong abilities in thought leadership, design thinking principles.
• Experience target operating model, large scale control remediation, and/or process redesign projects preferred.
• Strong organizational and analytical skills and the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
• Detail-oriented and highly motivated.
• Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
• Possess industry knowledge.
