The Hanover is seeking an Assistant Vice President of Allied Healthcare to join our growing team. This person will be based in Reston, VA or elsewhere in the Northeast near a Hanover office.
Reporting to the Vice President of Hanover’s Healthcare team, the Assistant Vice President of Allied Healthcare will be responsible for product design, distribution strategy, pricing/rate analysis, underwriting appetite and direction of the dedicated Allied Healthcare Underwriting team. Working closely with executive leadership, the successful candidate will drive the planning and execution of program initiatives. The successful candidate will also drive submission flow and create a sales oriented culture within the team regularly interacting with the Hanover agency force and underwriting team to produce a profitable book of business.
This is a Full-time, Exempt role.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
• Product and coverage development to include working with the product team on existing coverage language, reviewing existing coverages we may want to provide, or classes of business to underwrite.
• Strategic planning to effectively define and develop long-term business solutions; Creates collaborative, productive partnerships with key stakeholders such as Specialty management, actuarial, operations, claims, product, marketing, and other key functions to establish strategies that will achieve overall company goals.
• Performs pricing & rate analysis and monitoring in collaboration with Actuarial partners to include developing risk selection and pricing tools that streamline the underwriting process and improve profitability.
• Manages a team of dedicated healthcare underwriters while overseeing a director level role and their team; Provides the leadership mentoring and guidance necessary to build and sustain a high performing workforce.
• Serves as subject matter expert for ensuring effective communication of underwriting philosophy, quality expectations and mix of business for various sectors.
• Balances technical underwriting expertise and sales skills in being able to understand and meet the agents’ needs while driving business growth. Synthesizes distribution results into key learnings and actionable, results-oriented programs for field use in highlighting opportunities and gaps.
• Shares best practices in sales for assigned products within business unit driving successful achievement of production goals in each office. Work with UWs to review UW territories, distribution focus, and develop strategy by territory.
• Travels with field leadership and underwriting staff regularly and as needed to model effective sales practices in the agency plant, seeking out partnership opportunities and demonstrating a successful approach.
• Partners effectively with both leadership and underwriting staff to influence results and set the appropriate direction for assigned products in each branch.
• Direct performance management by setting cascading goals, giving and receiving feedback, documenting and delivering performance reviews, addressing performance issues, creating and implementing development plans while conforming to policies and other internal procedures
• Accountable for monitoring office and/or team performance through file review results, financial activity analysis, ad hoc reports, agent feedback, and other methods. Provide feedback and coaching and take appropriate action.

Position Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Insurance certification(s) preferred
• 10 years effective previous professional liability with a focus in medical malpractice experience required, underwriting management experience preferred
• Strategic thinking, with good judgment and an intuitive sense of where to look for risks and opportunities both within the company and in the broader industry
• Strong people management skills, effective at coaching and motivating staff. Serves as a role model in building effective relationships
• Sales orientation, competent in marketing, developing relationships with agents, making agency calls with UWs, providing coaching/feedback

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
• Ability to use a personal computer, handheld devices and other standard office equipment
