Job Summary
CNA’s Financial Control Team within the Corporate Finance Department is comprised of financial experts who collaborate with business leaders to establish and manage internal controls over financial reporting while educating the company on financial risk. We serve in a second line of defense capacity to provide governance over the control activities of the Company.
This role will develop a deep understanding of their supported business areas to ensure key business activities, initiatives and processes are effectively controlled. Through a comprehensive view of the business, this role will provide you with leadership opportunities to make an impact on CNA’s financial control environment. This role will work with assigned business areas to influence their business leaders to ensure an appropriate control environment exists, function as the liaison between the business and our auditors, and lead special projects. In addition, this role will develop and coach junior staff team members by reviewing work and providing feedback.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
1. Assures that accounting records are prepared and maintained in accordance with the company's accounting policies, chart of accounts and related accounting principles and practices, and that subordinate ledgers reconcile with the general ledger.
2. Prescribes methods of providing accounting data for various reports and statements where the need does not follow the normal content of accounts.
3. Collaborates with management to develop schedules, procedures, and systems to enable the timely and informative accumulation, adjustment, and reporting of financial data.
4. Makes work assignments schedules and reviews work in progress.
5. Manages accounting staff and responsible for handling personnel actions including performance reviews, salary recommendations, and coordination of staff training and development.
6. Recommends modifications to standard procedures.
7. Participates in determining the proper accounting treatment of complex or unusual transactions.
8. Assures adequate documentation/support of transactions and reports.
9. Supervises preparation of and approves reports.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. Knowledge of corporate/departmental and industry accounting practices, procedures and principles with ability to modify or develop new procedures to meet specialized needs of the organization.
2.Thorough knowledge of GAAP and statutory accounting principles, practices and procedures.
3. Thorough knowledge and understanding of processing systems and applications.
4. Ability to supervise, direct and handle personnel and training issues.
5. Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software systems.
6. Detail oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects effectively.
7. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with personnel at all levels.
8. Thorough analytical and problem solving skills.
9. Ability to exercise professional judgement and assume responsibility for decisions which have an impact on people and quality of service.
10. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance.
2. Typically a minimum of five to eight years related work experience.
