Reporting to the Head of Consumer Bank Marketing, the Japanese Segment Marketing Strategist is responsible for leading marketing strategy and planning for the Retail Specialized Markets (RSM) line of business as well as the Japanese Customer Service Unit (JCSU). The Marketing Strategist provides marketing leadership by defining marketing needs and developing marketing plans to support acquisition and relationship deepening goals. The Marketing Strategist ensures delivery of defined marketing initiatives across the spectrum of marketing channels and technologies, but primarily focuses on advertising, sales support, and client communications. Additionally, the Marketing Strategist ensures all marketing, communications, and operational documentation is translated appropriately (Japanese language fluency required) and is consistent with Union Bank’s brand positioning.
Major Responsibilities
Marketing Plan Development and Management
• Create and manage annual marketing plans that align with the needs of the business.
• Re-visit plans quarterly to ensure they continue to meet business needs.
• Serve as the day-to-day owner of specific high-profile marketing programs that touch Union Bank’s Japanese Segment client portfolios.
Marketing Execution
• Oversee Union Bank’s ad agency relationship(s) that support Japanese Segment client portfolio marketing and communications. Activities include annual media, creative development, and client communications.
• Work closely with the Marketing Shared Services (MSS) team and related 3rd party translation agencies to ensure all English-to-Japanese and Japanese-to-English translations are executed flawlessly across all marketing assets, communications, websites, and operational documents and forms.
• Serve as the primary Compliance/Legal contact for Japanese Segment marketing.
• Plan and integrate Japanese Segment marketing and communications activities (as necessary) across Retail Channel, Enterprise Marketing, Regional Marketing, and Multi-Cultural Marketing to ensure appropriateness and associate readiness (branches, JCSU).
Business Partner Collaboration
• Work with team members within the line of business to align business needs with Marketing output.
• Interact with senior management by providing marketing expertise and sound business judgment to deliver creative and effective marketing recommendations.
• Be familiar with the competition, including customer experience and marketing messaging, as it relates to Japanese Segment (and even broader Asian Segment competitive approaches).
• Ideate and present innovative Marketing opportunities for testing and learning.
• Oversee marketing budget and work with Finance to ensure the budgeting, forecasting, and in-year impacts are being accounted for on a monthly basis.
Digital Marketing, Sales, and CRM
• Work closely with the Digital Marketing Team to deliver appropriate digital functionality within unionbank.com.
• “Own” the digital content related to the Japanese Client Segment unionbank.com.
• Determine how best to approach, onboard, and maintain customer relationships leveraging various Marketing assets. This includes initial touchpoints at the on-set of the sales process (websites, collateral) through the application and early-stage relationship process (in-language forms, welcome kits, on-boarding) to business as usual communications (routine or ad-hoc communications, website content).
Qualifications
Education, Years of Experience, and Type of Work Experience
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• MBA or Master’s degree preferred.
• 5+ years of marketing experience.
• Successful candidates will have prior work experience both in Japan and in the United States.
Knowledge and Experience
• Bilingual marketing communications. Both Japanese and English language fluency is required. Candidates must have the ability to read, write, and speak the Japanese language at native-level fluency. Additionally, a keen understanding of Japanese business and non-business customs will assist the candidate in performing day-to-day activities.
• Candidates should possess a background that includes Direct Mail, e-Mail, Digital Advertising, Print Advertising, and Sales Support (namely Merchandising and Collateral). Exposure to Web Page Content, Sponsorships, PR, and Social Media helpful but not required.
